Area code 613

613 is eastern Ontario's area code, from Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley to Kingston, Belleville and Cornwall. It's one of Canada's original 1947 codes, and since 2010 it has shared its territory with 343, then 753. Gatineau, across the river, uses Quebec's codes.

Where 613 is used

The Canadian Numbering Administrator lists 132 exchange areas for 613 and its two overlays, grouped into eight regions named after Ottawa, Kingston, Belleville, Cornwall, Pembroke, Brockville, Smiths Falls and Hawkesbury.1 The area runs from Bancroft and Trenton in the west to Hawkesbury and Lancaster at the Quebec border, and up the Ottawa Valley to Deep River and Rolphton.1

131 of those exchange areas are in Ontario. One, St-Regis, is in Quebec and belongs to the Cornwall region.1 Gatineau and Aylmer, across the Ottawa River, are exchange areas of 819, 873 and 468, in a region the administrator names after Hull.1

Ottawa's own exchange area is called Ottawa-Hull in the administrator's list.1 Lookup sites that read that list can show "Ottawa-Hull" for a 613 number, which doesn't mean the caller is in Gatineau.

From most of Ontario to the east end

When AT&T assigned the first area codes in 1947, Ontario got two: 416 and 613.3 613 then gave up ground twice. 519 took parts of 416 and 613 in 1953, and 705 took parts of 613 and 519 in 1957.3

Until 2006, people could dial seven digits for local calls between 613 and 819, so an exchange prefix in use on one side of the Ottawa River couldn't be reused on the other. Mandatory ten-digit dialling in both codes, in October 2006, ended that restriction.3 The overlays followed: 343 in May 2010 and 753 in March 2022.2,3

When eastern Ontario needs a fourth code

The administrator's July 2026 forecast has 613, 343 and 753 lasting until May 2032, and the area isn't in relief planning yet.4 The next code is already chosen. In May 2025 the CRTC set aside 871 for eastern Ontario, when the forecast still pointed to March 2029.5

Like every overlay since 2001, 871 won't change anyone's number. New lines would start getting it once the CRTC sets a date.6

Calls from 613 numbers

Ottawa is the seat of the federal government, so a 613 number can look official. That makes it useful to scammers. The Canada Revenue Agency tells people not to trust the number on their call display. Ask for the caller's name, office and callback number, end the call, then check the number with the agency's verification tool before you call back.7

The CRTC says callers can display the number of a real person or organization, including government offices.8 The same checks apply to any 613 call that asks for money or personal details.

Questions people ask

Where is area code 613?

Eastern Ontario. 613 covers Ottawa, Kingston, Belleville, Cornwall, Pembroke, Brockville and the towns around them, plus one exchange area in Quebec, St-Regis.

Is 613 Ottawa?

Yes. Ottawa is the biggest city in the 613 area, but the code covers all of eastern Ontario. 343 and 753 cover the same area.

Does Gatineau use 613?

No. Gatineau and the rest of western Quebec use 819, 873 and 468. Ottawa and Gatineau sit in different area code groups even though they face each other across the river.

What time is it in the 613 area code?

Eastern Ontario is on Eastern time: UTC−4 until 2 a.m. on Nov. 1, 2026, then UTC−5 after clocks fall back. The tool at the top of this page shows the current time there.

What area codes overlap with 613?

343, added in May 2010, and 753, added in March 2022. A fourth code, 871, is set aside for when the area runs short.

When will eastern Ontario get a new area code?

The administrator forecasts that 613, 343 and 753 will run out in May 2032. The CRTC has set aside 871 for the area but hasn't set a start date.

Does the CRA call from 613 numbers?

The CRA says not to trust caller ID at all. Get the caller's name and callback number, hang up, and check the number with the CRA's verification tool before calling back.

Is 613 one of the original area codes?

Yes. 613 was one of nine Canadian codes in AT&T's first plan in 1947. Ontario's other was 416.

How we did this

We counted exchange areas in the Canadian Numbering Administrator's listing dated Oct. 7, 2026, and took the history from the administrator's relief history and the NANPA database. The forecast comes from the administrator's Sept. 29, 2026 status report, and the set-aside code from CRTC Telecom Decision 2025-113. Advice on calls comes only from the CRA, the CRTC, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and the Government of Canada. Reddit quotes are verbatim, with usernames left out. The clock uses fixed offsets and Ontario's 2026 time rules, not your device's settings.

Area codes change slowly, but new codes, forecasts and time rules do move. Each change goes in the update log below.
