Area codes in Canada

Canada uses 55 area codes, and the CRTC has approved three more. Type any three digits to see whether a code is Canadian, where it's used, which codes share its territory and what time it is there now. The data comes from Canada's numbering administrator and the North American plan's own database, both updated Oct. 7, 2026.

Every Canadian area code, by area

Canada's 55 area codes cover 18 areas. In most of them, several codes share the same ground: when an area starts to run short of numbers, the CRTC adds a new code on top of the old one instead of redrawing the map.3,4 That's why Toronto has four codes and B.C. has six.

Three new area codes are coming

The CRTC approved three new codes in the past year, each for an area forecast to run out of numbers by 2029.5,6,7 All three are overlays, the only method the CRTC now uses. Nobody has to change their number, and ten-digit local dialling is already in place in each area.2,4

Existing customers keep their numbers. New lines in those areas can start getting the new code on or after its start date.

When each area could run out

Twice a year, carriers tell the Canadian Numbering Administrator how many numbers they expect to need. The administrator turns that into a projected exhaust date for each area.8 The July 2026 forecast puts eastern Quebec first, in November 2028, followed by Alberta, Nova Scotia and P.E.I., and the region around Toronto. The 905 area entered relief planning on Sept. 24, 2026.8

Six more codes are already earmarked. In November 2022 the CRTC set aside 537 for the 905 region and 460 for central and northeastern Ontario.9 In May 2025 it set aside 871 for eastern Ontario and 487 for southwestern Ontario.10 The administrator lists 387 as set aside for Toronto and says 926 is reserved for B.C.3,8

Is it a Canadian number?

A +1 number isn't always Canadian. Canada shares the North American Numbering Plan with the United States, its territories and 18 Caribbean and Atlantic jurisdictions, from Bermuda to Trinidad and Tobago.2 All of them use the same three-digit area code format, so 647 (Toronto), 646 (New York) and 649 (Turks and Caicos) look alike on a call display.2

Toll-free codes such as 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888 work across the whole plan, so they don't point to a province or state.2 Canada also has three non-geographic codes, 600, 622 and 633, for services that aren't tied to one place.2,11

A familiar area code doesn't prove who's calling

The CRTC says callers can change what shows on your call display. Scammers copy the first six digits of your own number so a call looks local, display your own number, or borrow a real company's or government office's number.12 The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre's advice is never to assume the number on your screen is accurate.13

Questions people ask

How many area codes does Canada have?

Canada has 55 area codes in service as of Oct. 7, 2026, across 18 areas. Three more are approved: 273 for eastern Quebec on Feb. 27, 2027, and 851 for Nova Scotia and P.E.I. and 568 for Alberta in 2028.

Is every +1 number from Canada or the U.S.?

No. The North American Numbering Plan also covers 18 Caribbean and Atlantic jurisdictions, including Jamaica, the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Dominican Republic. Type the area code into the lookup to see where it belongs.

What are the new area codes in Canada?

273 starts in eastern Quebec on Feb. 27, 2027. 851 starts in Nova Scotia and P.E.I. on May 27, 2028, and 568 in Alberta on June 10, 2028. All three are overlays on existing codes.

Will I have to change my number when a new area code arrives?

No. The CRTC now adds new codes as overlays, which don't require anyone to change their number. New lines may get the new code after its start date.

Which area codes are in Toronto?

Toronto uses 416, 647, 437 and 942. They cover the same area, the City of Toronto. The region around it, including Mississauga, Brampton, Markham and Hamilton, uses 905, 289, 365 and 742.

What area codes are in Ontario?

Ontario has 19: 416, 647, 437 and 942 in Toronto; 905, 289, 365 and 742 around it; 519, 226, 548 and 382 in the southwest; 613, 343 and 753 in the east; 705, 249 and 683 in the centre and northeast; and 807 in the northwest.

Can someone fake the area code on a call?

Yes. The CRTC says callers can alter the number shown on your call display, including copying the first digits of your own number. If a call asks for money or personal details, hang up and call back on a number you look up yourself.

Why can two places with the same area code be in different time zones?

Some codes cross time zone lines. 807 covers Thunder Bay on Eastern time and Kenora on Central time, 867 covers three territories, and 418 includes the Magdalen Islands, which use Atlantic time. The lookup shows each clock separately.

How we did this

We built the lookup from two official files: the Canadian Numbering Administrator's exchange area listing and the NANPA area code database, both dated Oct. 7, 2026. Start dates come from NANPA and match the administrator's relief history. Projected exhaust dates come from the administrator's Sept. 29, 2026 status report, and new codes from the CRTC decisions that approved them. The clock works from fixed offsets and Canada's 2026 time rules (see our daylight saving time guide), not your device's settings. Sources were retrieved Oct. 7, 2026.

Area codes change slowly, but new codes, forecasts and time rules do move. Each change goes in the update log below.
