Where 365 numbers are issued

The administrator lists 94 exchange areas for 365 and the codes that share it, all in Ontario.1 They wrap around Toronto from Hamilton, Grimsby and Fort Erie through Oakville, Brampton, Markham and Newmarket, then east to Oshawa, Port Hope and Cobourg, and north to Sutton.1

Toronto isn't on the list. The city has its own group, 416, 647, 437 and 942, with one exchange area: Toronto.1 A 365 number was issued in one of the surrounding regions.

How the 905 region got its third code

905 split from 416 in 1993, and 289 was laid over it in June 2001.3 In April 2009 the administrator warned that 289 and 905 would run out by February 2014, and the CRTC opened relief planning that May.4

The industry committee proposed starting a new code on Oct. 24, 2015. The CRTC moved that up by more than two years. On April 13, 2010, it chose 365, set March 25, 2013 as the start date and reserved 742 for the next round.5 It went earlier because a February 2010 forecast still showed exhaust in February 2014.4

The 905 region is planning a fifth code

Of Ontario's six area code groups, the 905 region is forecast to run out first: the administrator's July 2026 forecast puts exhaust in November 2029. The region entered relief planning on Sept. 24, 2026.7

The code is already picked. In November 2022 the CRTC set aside 537 for the 905, 289, 365 and 742 group, when the forecast pointed to May 2029.8 No start date has been approved yet.7

Calls from 365 numbers

The CRTC says callers can change what shows on your call display, including copying the first six digits of your own number so a call looks like it comes from a neighbour.9 The code on your screen tells you where a number was issued. It doesn't tell you who is calling.

How we did this

We counted exchange areas in the Canadian Numbering Administrator's listing dated Oct. 7, 2026, and took the history from the administrator's relief history, its archived 289/905 relief report, the NANPA database and CRTC decisions 2010-213, 2020-362 and 2022-308. The forecast and planning status come from the administrator's Sept. 29, 2026 status report. Advice on calls comes only from the CRTC, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and the Government of Canada. Reddit quotes are verbatim, with usernames left out. The clock uses fixed offsets and Ontario's 2026 time rules, not your device's settings.
