Data & methods
Earthquakes — live from the U.S. Geological Survey feed (M2.5+, past 7 days), filtered to events within Canada. Exact magnitudes, locations, and times as reported by USGS.
Weather & civil alerts — live from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) via the GeoMet weather-alerts service. Only alerts currently in effect are shown; "Ended" alerts are dropped and duplicate zones de-duplicated.
Wildfires (estimated) — this is the one number on the board that is not an official count. Canada's public agency fire-count feed was retired, so we derive an estimate from CWFIS satellite hotspots (thermal detections from the last 24 hours). Because a single large fire can trigger dozens of hotspot pixels, we cluster hotspots that fall within roughly 10 km of each other and count each cluster as one fire. The result (shown with a ~) approximates the number and location of active fires — it is not the official incident count from CIFFC or provincial agencies, and clustering may merge nearby fires or split very large ones. "Out of control" is estimated from unusually dense clusters. Fire dots on the map are cluster centroids.
Air quality (AQHI) — live from Environment Canada's realtime AQHI observations (GeoMet), showing the most recent index for eight major cities. Values are observed in real time and unverified. Falls back to sample values only if the feed is unreachable.
Trends & time machine — the board records its own history at the edge: a full snapshot every few hours (for the time machine) and one compact summary per day (for the trend charts and the week-over-week figure), stored on Cloudflare KV and retained up to 120 days. Charts and the time machine show sample data until enough real history accumulates, then switch to live automatically — each label reads "sample" or "live" so you always know which you're seeing.
