Area code 437

437 is a Toronto area code, issued since March 25, 2013. It covers the City of Toronto and nothing else, the same area as 416, 647 and 942. If a 437 number calls you in Winnipeg or Ottawa, the number was issued in Toronto or the caller faked it.

Where 437 numbers are issued

437 belongs to the same group as 416, 647 and 942, and the Canadian Numbering Administrator lists one exchange area for that group: Toronto.¹ A 437 number is a Toronto number. Ottawa's codes are 613, 343 and 753, and the region around Toronto uses 905, 289, 365 and 742.¹

So if your carrier hands you a 437 number in Ottawa or Kingston, you have a Toronto number. That happened to an Ottawa Reddit user who signed up with Bell in 2022 and asked whether it was normal.³ Ask for a number from your own area before you activate the line.

Why Toronto got 437

The administrator started relief planning for 416 and 647 in 2010.⁴ NANPA assigned 437 to Toronto on July 25, 2011, and carriers started issuing it on March 25, 2013, as a third code on the same ground.^2,5 The 905 region got its third code, 365, on the same day.^2,5

Start dates are NANPA in-service dates. The administrator's history gives the same month.^2,5

437 lasted 12 years as the newest Toronto code. In 2019 the administrator warned that 416, 437 and 647 together would run out by January 2024, and the CRTC added 942 on April 26, 2025.⁶ The July 2026 forecast now has the four codes lasting until November 2037.⁷

Calls and texts from 437 numbers

People across Canada report spam from 437 numbers. In November 2024 a Winnipeg Reddit user counted four calls in an hour, each from a 437 number starting with the same digits.⁸ That pattern fits what the CRTC calls caller ID spoofing: scammers can show any number they like, including numbers that look local or belong to someone else.⁹

Texts work the same way. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre says fraudsters can fake the number on a text as well as a call, and tells people never to click links in them.¹⁰ The Government of Canada asks you to forward suspicious texts to 7726, which spells SPAM on a keypad.¹¹

• Don't trust call display. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre says never to assume the number on your screen is accurate, for calls or texts.¹⁰
• Call back on a number you find yourself. If a caller says they're from your bank, a service provider, the police or a government agency, hang up and call the number on your card, your statement or the organization's website.^9,10
• Don't tap links in texts. Forward suspicious texts to 7726 (SPAM), then delete them.^10,11
• Report it. Report fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or to your local police, even if you didn't lose money.^9,11
• Cut down on telemarketing. Register your number on the National Do Not Call List and file a complaint about unwanted telemarketing calls.⁹

We took 437's area from the Canadian Numbering Administrator's exchange area listing, and its assignment and start dates from the NANPA database and the administrator's relief history, all checked Oct. 7, 2026. Forecasts come from the administrator's Sept. 29, 2026 status report and the CRTC's 2023 decision on 942. Advice on calls and texts comes only from the CRTC, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and the Government of Canada. Reddit quotes are verbatim, with usernames left out. The clock uses fixed offsets and Ontario's 2026 time rules, not your device's settings.
