Statutory holidays in Canada, 2026 and 2027
Canada has no single list of stat holidays. Each province and territory sets its own in its employment standards law, and the Canada Labour Code sets one for federally regulated jobs. The lists run from six holidays in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador to 11 in B.C. and the three territories. Pick where you work to see your dates, the next holiday and what you're owed.

Four holidays are on all 14 lists: New Year's Day, Canada Day, Labour Day and Christmas Day. Newfoundland and Labrador calls July 1 Memorial Day.2 Good Friday is on 13; in Quebec, your employer picks Good Friday or Easter Monday.3 After that, the lists split. Our calculation. Nunavut Day is July 9.21 The N.W.T. made June 21 a statutory holiday in 2001.22 Newfoundland and Labrador's regulations say five of its holidays are observed on dates the provincial cabinet proclaims under the Shops Closing Act; we show the calendar dates.23
When a holiday lands on a weekend
In 2026, Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, and National Indigenous Peoples Day, a holiday in Yukon and the N.W.T., fell on Sunday, June 21. In 2027, Christmas is a Saturday and Boxing Day a Sunday. What you get for a weekend holiday depends on the law that covers your job.
| Where you work | If a stat holiday lands on your day off |
|---|---|
| Federally regulated job | If New Year's Day, Canada Day, Sept. 30, Remembrance Day, Christmas or Boxing Day lands on a Saturday or Sunday you don't work, you get the scheduled workday right before or after off with pay. A different holiday that lands on a day off can be added to your vacation or taken when you and your employer agree.24 |
| British Columbia | You're paid an average day's pay when a stat lands on a regular or scheduled day off. The day doesn't move.25 |
| Alberta | If the holiday isn't one of your regular workdays and you don't work it, you get no holiday pay and no day off in lieu.6 |
| Saskatchewan | A holiday on a Saturday isn't moved. If New Year's Day, Christmas or Remembrance Day falls on a Sunday and your workplace is normally closed Sundays, the Monday is the holiday.7 |
| Manitoba | If a holiday lands on a Saturday or Sunday you don't normally work, you get the next regular workday off with holiday pay.8 |
| Ontario | A holiday on a day you don't normally work gets you a substitute working day off with holiday pay, within three months, or 12 if you agree in writing. You can also agree in writing to take the holiday pay instead.1 |
| Quebec | Your employer chooses: add the holiday allowance to that week's pay, or give you a paid day off on a date you agree on. If June 24 falls on a Sunday, the holiday moves to June 25 for people who don't work Sundays.3 |
| New Brunswick | If the holiday lands on a non-working day or your vacation, you get another working day off with pay, or a regular day's pay if you agree.26 |
| Nova Scotia | A holiday on your regular day off gets you a different paid day off: the next working day, the day after your vacation, or a day you agree on.27 |
| Prince Edward Island | If a paid holiday lands on a day you don't usually work, your employer must give you a paid day off on another day.12 |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | A holiday on a day you're not required to work gets you the next working day off with pay, or another day you both agree on.13 |
| Yukon | If a holiday falls on your non-working day, you get a holiday on your next working day.18 |
| Northwest Territories | The act gives a holiday with pay for each statutory holiday whether it falls on a day of work or not. It doesn't move the day.15 |
| Nunavut | If a holiday falls on your non-working day, your employer pays you for it or gives you a paid day off before your next vacation.16 |
Alberta and Saskatchewan are the outliers: an Alberta worker who doesn't normally work Saturdays gets nothing extra for Christmas 2027, and Saskatchewan doesn't move a Saturday holiday, though its holiday pay of 5% of recent wages is owed either way.6,7,28
Holiday pay basics, province by province
Part-time workers get stat holidays too. Ontario says full-time, part-time and term employees qualify no matter how recently they were hired,1 Alberta applies the same pay calculations to full-time, part-time and casual staff,6 and Quebec's CNESST says even someone hired a few days earlier gets the paid day.3 The formula changes from place to place, and several provinces add a qualifying period.
| Where you work | Who qualifies | Pay for the day off | If you work it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Federally regulated job | Part-time employees get the same 10 holidays, with pay adjusted to the hours they work.24 | 1/20 of your wages in the 4 weeks before | 1.5 times your rate for the hours, plus holiday pay |
| British Columbia | 30 calendar days employed, and wages on 15 of the last 30 days.29 | An average day's pay | 1.5 times for the hours, plus an average day's pay |
| Alberta | 30 workdays in the 12 months before. Full-time, part-time and casual employees use the same rules.6 | Your average daily wage, if it's a regular workday | 1.5 times plus your average daily wage, or a later paid day off |
| Saskatchewan | No minimum service: new employees get 5% of what they earned before the holiday.28 | 5% of your wages in the 4 weeks before | 1.5 times your hourly rate, on top of holiday pay |
| Manitoba | No minimum service. Miss your last shift before or first shift after without permission and you lose the pay.8 | A regular day's pay, or 5% of 4 weeks' wages if your hours vary | 1.5 times for the hours, plus holiday pay |
| Ontario | Full-time, part-time and new employees qualify if they work their last scheduled shift before and first one after.1 | 4 weeks' regular wages plus vacation pay, divided by 20 | Holiday pay plus 1.5 times, or regular pay plus a substitute day off |
| Quebec | Full-time and part-time, temporary or on call, even if you started a few days ago.3 | An allowance based on your wages in the weeks before | Your day's pay plus the allowance, or a paid day off within 3 weeks |
| New Brunswick | 90 calendar days with the employer in the 12 months before, and your scheduled day before and after.26 | A regular day's pay | Regular day's pay plus 1.5 times for each hour |
| Nova Scotia | Entitled to pay on 15 of the 30 days before, and you worked your last scheduled shift before and first after.27 | A regular day's pay | A regular day's pay plus 1.5 times for the hours |
| Prince Edward Island | Work your last scheduled shift before and first after, unless you have permission or a valid reason.12 | 5% of your regular wages in the 4 weeks before | 1.5 times plus holiday pay, or your wage and a paid day later |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | 30 calendar days with the employer, and your scheduled shifts before and after.2 | An average day's pay | Your choice: double pay, a paid day off within 30 days or an extra vacation day |
| Yukon | 30 calendar days employed, wages in the 2 weeks before, and your shifts before and after.30 | A day's wages, or 10% of 2 weeks' pay for part-time or irregular hours | The overtime rate (1.5 times), or regular pay plus a paid day off |
| Northwest Territories | 30 days with the employer in the 12 months before.31 | An average day's pay | 1.5 times for the hours, plus an average day's pay |
| Nunavut | 30 days worked for your employer in the 12 months before.16 | A regular day's pay | 1.5 times plus holiday pay, or another day off with pay |
Minimums under each law, summarized from the official pages cited in the tool and the "Who qualifies" column. Yukon's numbers come from its general holiday pay fact sheet.30 A contract or collective agreement can give you more.
Bank holidays and federal offices follow other lists
A "stat holiday" is a day your employment law gives you off with pay. Banks, the mail and government offices run on separate calendars, so a day can be a holiday for one and a workday for another.
- Payments and banks. Payments Canada's systems close on 10 days in 2026: the 10 federal general holidays, with Boxing Day moved to Monday, Dec. 28. Its 2027 schedule moves the Christmas closure to Monday, Dec. 27, and Boxing Day to Tuesday, Dec. 28. Family Day, Easter Monday and the August Civic Holiday aren't on its list.32 The Bank of Canada also marks Dec. 28, 2026, for Boxing Day; its schedule had no 2027 dates when we checked on Nov. 3.33 Bank staff are federally regulated, so the Canada Labour Code list applies to them.4
- Mail. Canada Post closes on national, provincial and territorial holidays, including Easter Monday and the August civic holidays, but still collects and delivers mail on Family Day, Louis Riel Day and Islander Day.34
- Taxes. The CRA's 2026 list adds Easter Monday and the Civic Holiday (outside Quebec). A payment due on a weekend or one of those days is on time if the CRA gets it the next business day.35
- Federal public servants. Their designated paid holidays add Easter Monday and a provincial or civic holiday where they work, and a holiday that falls on a day of rest moves to the next scheduled workday.36
- Provincial staff. Newfoundland and Labrador's public servants get 14 designated holidays, including St. Patrick's Day and Orangemen's Day.37 Private-sector workers there get the six in the Labour Standards Act.13
Days people ask about that aren't stat holidays
- Easter Monday. Not on any list except Quebec's, where the employer can pick it instead of Good Friday. It's optional in Alberta.3,6
- The first Monday in August in Ontario. Ontario employers don't have to give it.1 It is a stat holiday in B.C., Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, the N.W.T. and Nunavut, under different names.5,7,10,15,16 Alberta's Heritage Day is optional, and Manitoba says Terry Fox Day isn't a general holiday.6,8
- Boxing Day outside Ontario and federal jobs. Ontario's list and the federal list are the only two with Dec. 26. B.C., Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon and the N.W.T. name Boxing Day among the days that aren't holidays under their laws, and Alberta lists it as optional.5,6,8,14,28,31 New Brunswick and Nova Scotia still close most stores that day under their retail rules.17,19
- Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Neither is on any of the 14 lists; Saskatchewan's page names Christmas Eve as not a public holiday.28
- Remembrance Day in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and Nova Scotia. It isn't on those four lists, though Manitoba's separate Remembrance Day law closes most industries on Nov. 11.1,3,27,38 See our Remembrance Day guide for the rule in each province.
What people are saying
We read Reddit threads in r/ontario, r/alberta, r/britishcolumbia and r/PersonalFinanceCanada. Most of the confusion is about the August long weekend, Sept. 30 and holidays that land on a day off.
"It’s a civic holiday, not a statutory holiday, like Canada Day or Labour Day."
Commenter on r/ontario, Aug. 1, 202239
Correct for Ontario. The province's guide says employers don't have to give the first Monday in August.1
"Growing up it was always called a bank holiday. Banks and other civic/federal institutions are closed but most stores and restaurants will work normal hours."
Commenter on r/ontario, Aug. 1, 202239
Partly. Canada Post closes and the CRA treats it as a holiday, but Payments Canada's systems run that day.32,34,35
"Heritage Day is not a statutory holiday like Canada day is. It's up to employers what they do with that day, legally speaking."
Commenter on r/alberta, Aug. 12, 202440
Correct. Alberta lists Heritage Day as an optional holiday.6
"Nothing. If its your regular day off, its just a day off"
Commenter on r/alberta, Oct. 29, 2023, replying to a worker on a four-day schedule41
That matches Alberta's rule, which is stricter than most provinces': no holiday pay and no day in lieu if you don't work.6
"It’s for all eligible BC employees now, not just government employees. It’s also up to the employer to give you a day off in lieu, you don’t automatically get Monday off even if you work M-F"
Commenter on r/britishcolumbia, Sept. 13, 2023, about Sept. 30 that year, a Saturday42
B.C. says a stat on your day off earns an average day's pay; the law doesn't move the day to Monday.25
"Boss said we are a “federally regulated industry” so the BC stat day doesn’t count for us…"
Commenter on r/britishcolumbia, Sept. 13, 202342
The Canada Labour Code has listed Sept. 30 as a general holiday for federally regulated employers since 2021, so those workers get it under federal law.4
Claims we checked
Holiday-list sites often copy one national table. These are the errors we found while building this page.
- False
- FalseThe Civic Holiday is a stat holiday in Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan, Ontario, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Nunavut.
Same site, same table.43 Ontario employers don't have to give it, Alberta's Heritage Day is optional and Manitoba says Terry Fox Day isn't a general holiday. The list also leaves out the N.W.T., where the first Monday in August is statutory.1,6,8,15 The table also marks Victoria Day and Thanksgiving as national except Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador; neither is on New Brunswick's or P.E.I.'s list.10,12
- FalseSept. 30 is optional in Nunavut.
Canada-holidays.ca marks it "(Optional)" on its Nunavut page.44 Nunavut's Labour Standards Act lists it as a general holiday.16 The territory's own labour standards fact sheet still showed the older list of 10 holidays, without Sept. 30, when we checked in October 2026, and the CFIB's guide repeats that list.45,46

Questions people ask
What are the stat holidays in Canada in 2026 and 2027?
It depends where you work. Each province and territory has its own list, and the Canada Labour Code has one for federally regulated jobs. New Year's Day (Jan. 1), Canada Day (July 1), Labour Day (Sept. 7, 2026, and Sept. 6, 2027) and Christmas Day (Dec. 25) are on all 14 lists. Good Friday (April 3, 2026, and March 26, 2027) is on 13; Quebec employers can pick Easter Monday instead. The rest vary by province.
What are the 12 statutory holidays in Canada?
No jurisdiction has 12. The federal list for banks, airlines and other federally regulated employers has 10. B.C., Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut have 11, Saskatchewan 10, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario nine, Quebec, New Brunswick and P.E.I. eight, and Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador six.
Is Boxing Day a stat holiday?
Only in Ontario and for federally regulated jobs. It's optional in Alberta and isn't a stat holiday in the other provinces and territories. Boxing Day falls on a Saturday in 2026 and a Sunday in 2027. Federal workers who don't work that day get the scheduled workday before or after off with pay, and Ontario workers get a substitute day off with holiday pay.
Is Easter Monday a stat holiday?
Not for most workers. Quebec lets the employer choose Good Friday or Easter Monday, and Alberta lists it as optional. Federal public servants get Easter Monday, Canada Post closes, and the CRA treats it as a holiday for due dates.
Is the August Civic Holiday a stat holiday?
It is in B.C. (B.C. Day), Saskatchewan (Saskatchewan Day), New Brunswick (New Brunswick Day), the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. In 2027 it's Monday, Aug. 2. Ontario employers don't have to give it, Alberta's Heritage Day is optional, and Manitoba says Terry Fox Day isn't a general holiday.
Is Sept. 30 a stat holiday?
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a stat holiday for federally regulated jobs and in B.C., Manitoba (as Orange Shirt Day), P.E.I., Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. It's optional in Alberta and isn't on the lists in Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and Labrador.
Is Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve a stat holiday?
No. Neither Dec. 24 nor Dec. 31 is on any provincial, territorial or federal list. Saskatchewan's employment standards page says Christmas Eve isn't a public holiday. Your employer can still give you the time off.
What happens when a stat holiday falls on a weekend?
It depends on your province. Ontario, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I., Newfoundland and Labrador and Yukon give you another day off with pay in most cases. B.C. pays an average day's pay instead. Alberta gives nothing if the day isn't one of your regular workdays, and Saskatchewan doesn't move a Saturday holiday. Christmas 2027 falls on a Saturday.
How we did this
We took each holiday list from the jurisdiction's own employment standards page or statute, and the federal list from the Canada Labour Code and Employment and Social Development Canada. Where an official page and the law disagree, we followed the law and said so, as with Nunavut's fact sheet. Bank, mail and tax-office closures come from Payments Canada, the Bank of Canada, Canada Post and the CRA. We gathered the sources on Oct. 7, 2026, and checked every one again on Nov. 3, 2026.
The tool computes every date from the legal rule: fixed dates, the n-th Monday of a month, the Monday before May 25, and Easter by the Gregorian calculation. We tested the Python and JavaScript versions against the official 2025 to 2028 tables and against each other for every jurisdiction from 2000 to 2060. The countdown runs on each jurisdiction's own clock, not your phone's settings, and applies the March and November clock changes only where they still happen (see our daylight saving time guide). This page is general information, not legal advice; for your own case, call your employment standards office.
