Area code 672

672 is a British Columbia area code. The CRTC set it aside in 2011 and switched it on May 4, 2019, across the whole province, on the same ground as 604, 250, 778, 236 and 257. NANPA's database lists June 1, 2013, which was 236's start date, and the lookup below repeats it.

Where 672 numbers are issued

The CRTC laid 672 over all 311 exchange areas served by 236, 250, 604 and 778, so a 672 number can come from Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, Prince George, Fort Nelson or Atlin.1,3 Unlike 604 and 250, it has no home half of the province.4

Set aside in 2011, switched on in 2019

The CRTC set 672 aside on July 28, 2011, in the same decision that chose 236.5 In March 2016 the administrator warned that B.C.'s four codes would run out by April 2021.3

The planning committee weighed four options: one overlay across the province, or one of three concentrated overlays on smaller areas. The CRTC rejected the concentrated options because they would have split B.C. into two planning areas, each running out at a different time.3

On Feb. 14, 2018, it approved 672 for the whole province, effective May 4, 2019, 12 months before the revised exhaust date of May 2020.3 The administrator's history lists 672 in May 2019.4

Why the lookup says 2013

NANPA's database, the file our lookup and many others read, gives 672 the same dates as 236: assigned July 28, 2011, in service June 1, 2013.2 For 236 both dates are right. For 672, July 28, 2011 is the day the CRTC set the code aside, and June 1, 2013 was 236's start.5

The CRTC set May 4, 2019 as the day 672 took effect, and the administrator's history agrees.3,4 Our lookup shows NANPA's figures as published for every code, so it shows 2013 for 672. Go by the CRTC date.

When B.C. needs a seventh code

After 672 came 257, on May 24, 2025.2,7 The administrator's July 2026 forecast gives B.C.'s six codes until July 2032. The province isn't in relief planning, and NANPA has reserved 926 for the next round.8

B.C. is sixth in line among Canada's 18 areas, behind eastern Quebec, Alberta, Nova Scotia and P.E.I., the region around Toronto and eastern Ontario.8 Our area code lookup lists the forecast for every area.

Calls from 672 numbers

The CRTC says callers can change what shows on your call display, including copying the first six digits of your own number so a call looks like it comes from a neighbour.9 The code on your screen tells you where a number was issued. It doesn't tell you who is calling.

We read an April 2023 r/vancouver thread about 672 numbers. The most common complaint in it is sites and services that reject them.

Questions people ask

Where is area code 672?

British Columbia. 672 covers the whole province, including Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, Kamloops and Prince George, on the same ground as 604, 250, 778, 236 and 257.

Is 672 a Canadian area code?

Yes. 672 is a British Columbia, Canada code. The CRTC set its start date as May 4, 2019.

When did 672 start?

May 4, 2019. The CRTC set the code aside in July 2011 and approved its start in February 2018.

Why does NANPA say 672 started in 2013?

NANPA's database gives 672 the same dates as 236, which did start on June 1, 2013. The CRTC's decision and the numbering administrator's history both put 672's start in May 2019.

Is 672 a Vancouver area code?

Partly. 672 covers Vancouver and the rest of B.C. A 672 number could have been issued in Victoria, Kelowna or Prince George.

What time is it in the 672 area code?

Most of B.C. is on UTC−7 all year. Clocks there moved ahead for the last time on March 8, 2026, and didn't fall back on Nov. 1. The East Kootenay and Golden stay on UTC−6 with Alberta. The tool at the top of this page shows both clocks.

Will B.C. get another area code?

Not on any schedule yet. The administrator forecasts B.C.'s numbers will last until July 2032, and NANPA has reserved 926 for the province's next relief.

Is a call from a 672 number a scam?

Not by itself. Plenty of real numbers start with 672, but scammers can fake any number. If a caller asks for money or personal details, hang up and call back on a number you find yourself.

How we did this

We counted exchange areas in the Canadian Numbering Administrator's listing dated Oct. 7, 2026, and found the same 311 in its Nov. 4 file. The history comes from the administrator's relief history, the NANPA database and CRTC decisions 2011-451, 2018-58 and 2023-135. NANPA's Nov. 4 file still gives 672 an in-service date of June 1, 2013; where NANPA and the CRTC disagree, we use the CRTC's decision. The forecast comes from the administrator's Sept. 29, 2026 status report, still its latest on Nov. 4, and B.C.'s time rules from the Government of B.C. Advice on calls comes only from the CRTC, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and the Government of Canada. Reddit quotes are verbatim, with usernames left out. The clock uses fixed offsets and B.C.'s 2026 time rules, not your device's settings.
