Things to do in Vancouver, 2026
We checked prices, hours and transit for each place on its official page, then counted which places locals name when visitors ask r/askvan what to do. Free picks, rainy days, kids, seasons and this weekend are below.
Our picks: what locals name most
We read 188 top-level comments in 12 r/askvan threads from the past year where visitors and newcomers asked what to do in Vancouver, and counted how many named each place. The seven picks below group the most-named places into half-day outings, each checked against its official page on Oct. 7, 2026. Counts are our calculation; the method is at the end.

First afternoon, free
Stanley Park and the seawall
The City describes Stanley Park as a 400-hectare West Coast rainforest, open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.1 The seawall belongs to a 28 km seaside greenway that runs from the Vancouver Convention Centre to Spanish Banks, with walkers on the water side and cyclists on the inside path.2 TransLink's #19 bus stops at Pipeline Road and at Stanley Park Loop, a short walk from the aquarium; no transit runs around the park itself.3 Locals most often suggested walking from Coal Harbour to English Bay or renting a bike for the loop.
23comments name Stanley Park; 21 name the seawall -
Food, crafts and a short ferry ride
Granville Island
The Public Market is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., on every statutory holiday except Dec. 25, Dec. 26 and Jan. 1, and closes on Mondays in January only.4 The #50 False Creek bus runs from Gastown along Granville Street and stops at Anderson Street and West 2nd Avenue; pay parking runs 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.5 Locals split on it: some call it a tourist trap, others say go on a weekday morning and take the little ferry across False Creek.
16comments name Granville Island, in 9 of 12 threads -
The walk locals send people on
Main Street and Commercial Drive
No tickets, no hours. Commenters gave specific stretches: Main Street from Terminal Avenue up past Broadway, or between 8th Avenue and King Edward; Commercial Drive between Venables and Broadway. Both start near SkyTrain stations (Main Street–Science World and Commercial–Broadway). Expect coffee, record and comic shops, thrift stores, breweries in Mount Pleasant and small comedy rooms at night.
13comments name Main Street or Mount Pleasant; 8 name Commercial Drive -
Beaches and a west-side afternoon
Kitsilano, English Bay and Spanish Banks
The Park Board runs nine beaches, eight on the ocean and one on a lake, covering 18 km of shoreline. Lifeguards are on duty from noon to 8 p.m. starting on Victoria Day.6 In the threads, Kits meant coffee on West 4th Avenue and the shore path out along Point Grey Road; Jericho, Locarno and Spanish Banks meant a picnic and time watching the water.
11comments name Kitsilano; 11 name English Bay -
Best museum, plus a forest
Museum of Anthropology and the UBC campus
Adult admission is $26 and youth (6 to 18) pay $13; Thursday evenings after 5 p.m. are half price, when the museum stays open until 9. It closes on Mondays from Oct. 15 to May 15.7 Westbound buses including the 99 B-Line, R4 and 25 end at UBC Exchange, a 15-minute walk away.8 Pacific Spirit Regional Park wraps the campus; park hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until Nov. 2, then 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.9
9comments name UBC; 7 name the museum -
The free suspension bridge
The North Shore: SeaBus, Lonsdale Quay and Lynn Canyon
The Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge hangs 50 metres above Lynn Creek and is free to cross; about 30 steps lead down to it, so it is not accessible by stroller or wheelchair.10 The #227 community shuttle stops a five-minute walk from the park, and pay parking costs $3 an hour from March 1 to Oct. 31.11 At Lonsdale Quay, the Polygon Gallery is by donation every day.12 Two of the four comments that named Capilano told visitors to go to Lynn Canyon instead.
8comments name the SeaBus or Lonsdale Quay; 6 name Lynn Canyon -
History, a garden, and an honest warning
Gastown, Chinatown and the Sun Yat-Sen garden
Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden charges $16 for adults and $32 for a family, and is open Wednesday to Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with last entry at 3:30.13 Locals called the two districts small enough to see in one morning, and warned that the blocks of East Hastings between them show open drug use and homelessness, which can jar visitors who don't expect it.
10comments name Gastown; 8 name Chinatown

Things to do in Vancouver this weekend or today
Dated events go stale in days, so we don't list them. Two official calendars do the job: Destination Vancouver, the city's tourism agency, keeps event listings by month, including concerts and Canucks home games,32 and the City of Vancouver lists the events that it and the Park Board produce, sponsor or fund.33 On a weekend, every TransLink trip is a 1-zone fare all day, which makes a SeaBus run to the North Shore $3.50 by contactless card.14
Dates we confirmed for the next few weeks:
- Oct. 9 to Nov. 1: Canyon Frights, the Halloween version of Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, which showed hours of 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 7.34
- Until Oct. 12: Grouse Mountain's free shuttle from Canada Place runs until Monday, Oct. 12,35 Thanksgiving, when the Central Library is closed.16
- Oct. 13 to Nov. 10: the Grouse Grind is closed for maintenance. Metro Vancouver says the BCMC Route stays open and ends at the same place.36
- From Oct. 15: the Museum of Anthropology starts closing on Mondays, until May 15.7
- Oct. 23 to 25 and Oct. 30 to 31, 4 to 9 p.m.: Haunted Village at Burnaby Village Museum, the only paid event there.37
- First Friday of each month, 4 to 8 p.m.: free admission at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The next two fall on Nov. 6 and Dec. 4.24
- Closed for the year: the Richmond Night Market ran from April 24 to Sept. 20, 2026.38 Lists that still send October visitors there are out of date.
Free things to do in Vancouver
Most of what locals named costs nothing. Of the 15 places in the chart above, 11 are free to walk into (our count).
- Stanley Park and the seawall. The park is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and parking is the only cost.1
- Lynn Canyon. Free bridge and trails; the Ecology Centre beside it is by donation and the park gate is open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., with closing times that change by season.11
- Queen Elizabeth Park. At 125 metres above sea level it is the highest point in Vancouver, with a 52-hectare park and a quarry garden around the Bloedel dome.17
- Beaches and Pacific Spirit. Nine city beaches, plus forest trails on the UBC side.6,9
- Lighthouse Park. About 75 hectares of protected forest in West Vancouver.30
- Central Library. The downtown library has a rooftop garden and is open until 8:30 p.m. Monday to Wednesday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.16 One local called it "probably my favourite place in the City."
- Polygon Gallery. By donation all day, every day, and open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays.12
- Burnaby Village Museum. Free admission when open. Festive Village runs Nov. 25 to Dec. 13 (Wednesday to Sunday) and daily from Dec. 16 to Jan. 3, 2 to 9 p.m.; carousel rides cost $2.86.37
- Cheap, not free: the Museum of Anthropology at half price on Thursday evenings7 and the Vancouver Art Gallery free on the first Friday evening of the month.24
Things to do in Vancouver by season
Fall (now)
Daylight shrinks and hours follow. Bloedel Conservatory is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Oct. 31, then 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in November and December.18 VanDusen Botanical Garden closes at 5 p.m. until Oct. 31, then keeps 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. hours in November and December, when the adult price drops from $15.81 to $11.19.28 Capilano's Canyon Frights and Burnaby's Haunted Village cover Halloween.34,37 One local, writing in late October, called a walk around Lynn Loop or Rice Lake "the definitive Pacific Northwest walk experience."
Winter
Cypress Provincial Park offers skiing, snowshoeing and snowtubing; parking stays free in Lot 3B, but the resort may charge in other lots from Nov. 1 to May 31.31 Grouse Mountain admission, which covers the Skyride or gondola, is $89 for adults or $74 at the Lower Mainland resident rate.20 Capilano's B.C. residents' annual pass covers its special events, including Canyon Lights,22 which one local recommended for a winter visit. Metro Vancouver closes the Grouse Grind each winter when conditions turn hazardous.36
Spring
VanDusen's higher season price ($15.81) starts in April, and its gates open at 9 a.m. from April.28 Bloedel stays open to 6 p.m. in March and April.18 Metro Vancouver also closes the Grind each spring to clear debris left by winter.36
Summer
Lifeguards work the city beaches from noon to 8 p.m. starting on Victoria Day.6 Bloedel stays open until 7 p.m. from May to Labour Day, and VanDusen until 7 p.m. from June to Labour Day.18,28 The Richmond Night Market's 2026 season ran from late April to Sept. 20.38 Locals also suggested Bard on the Beach and evening walks on the seawall.
Things to do in Vancouver on a rainy day
- Museum of Anthropology. $26, or half price on Thursday evenings, when it stays open to 9 p.m.7

- Bloedel Conservatory. Tropical birds, koi and over 500 exotic plants under a dome, for $9.50.18,19

Neighbourhoods to walk
Commenters named neighbourhoods more often than attractions. These are the ones they named, with our counts.
- Main Street and Mount Pleasant (13 comments). Independent shops, coffee, breweries and murals. Start at Terminal Avenue and walk uphill.
- Kitsilano (11). West 4th Avenue for coffee and shops, then the beach path toward Point Grey.
- Gastown (10) and Chinatown (8). Small and walkable in one morning, with the Sun Yat-Sen garden at the Chinatown end.13
- Yaletown and False Creek (9). The seawall between Chinatown and the Olympic Village, with ferries across to Granville Island.
- Commercial Drive (8). Food and shops between Venables Street and Broadway.
- The West End and Davie Village (5). Between downtown and Stanley Park; one commenter suggested a walking tour of Davie Village's queer history.
- Lonsdale Quay and the Shipyards (8). One SeaBus ride from Waterfront Station.
- Deep Cove (4). Kayaking and the Quarry Rock hike. Route 212 runs from Phibbs Exchange and route 211 from Burrard Station downtown.26 One local said go on a weekday.
- Steveston (3). Richmond's fishing village and the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, which Parks Canada puts about 45 minutes' drive from Vancouver.27
Two commenters in the same itinerary thread gave visitors the same heads-up: the few blocks of East Hastings between the two districts have many people living on the street. Both said it is more jarring than dangerous. Their words are below.
What locals say
These are anecdotes from r/askvan, not a survey. We quote comments word for word, trimmed with "…", and link each one.
Pick Lynn Canyon over Capilano
“I wouldn’t do Capilano; I’d rather go to Lynn Canyon”
r/askvan, Aug. 27, 2026 · Read on Reddit
“Biking around Stanley park, Lynn canyon instead of Capilano for sure.”
r/askvan, Aug. 28, 2026 · Read on Reddit
The other side: one local recommended Capilano's winter Canyon Lights, calling it "expensive but a pretty great light display," and pointed to the free shuttle from downtown.
The seawall is the default, and it's free
“The Seawall around Coal Harbor or English Bay is very nice for a stroll. … It’s all free (apart from parking if you are driving).”
r/askvan, June 19, 2026 · Read on Reddit
“The seawall from Ambleside to Dundarave in West Vancouver is a beautiful, breezy, easy walk with amazing views of Stanley Park and Point Grey”
r/askvan, Oct. 28, 2025 · Read on Reddit
Walk a street, not a mall
“Get off sky train at terminal and main. … Bookstores, art supply stores, coffee, real food (not food court), comic book and record stores, thrift etc etc.”
r/askvan, March 21, 2026 · Read on Reddit
“One very Vancouver afternoon would be walking around Main Street and Mount Pleasant for coffee and small shops, then heading to Kits or Vanier Park for sunset if the sky clears.”
r/askvan, Aug. 27, 2026 · Read on Reddit
Granville Island: go early, or skip it
“Granville island is a massive tourist trap, locals don’t hang out there, but they work in the shops.”
r/askvan, Aug. 31, 2026 · Read on Reddit
“you can walk over to Plaza of Nations to catch a water taxi across False Creek to get there. Even on a rainy day, it’s a fun little trip”
r/askvan, Oct. 7, 2025 · Read on Reddit
Gastown and Chinatown: go, but know what you'll see
“Just a heads up about Chinatown. You will witness a lot of homelessness, open drug use and unclean areas. Most people down there won’t harm you but it can be a very jarring area for tourists to visit.”
r/askvan, Oct. 7, 2025 · Read on Reddit
“It’s sad and depressing rather than dangerous, but if you’re not expecting this and you’re just nonchalantly meandering between Gastown and Chinatown, it can take you by surprise.”

Getting around and saving money
TransLink raised fares by an average of 5% on July 1, 2026. A 1-zone adult trip costs $3.50 with a contactless card or $2.85 with stored value on a Compass Card, and a DayPass covering all zones is $12.55. Every trip after 6:30 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends is a 1-zone fare, and one fare lasts 90 minutes across bus, SkyTrain and SeaBus. Trips that start at the YVR airport stations add a $6.50 AddFare.14
By our calculation, a DayPass beats paying by contactless card on your fourth 1-zone trip of the day ($14.00 against $12.55), and beats Compass stored value on your fifth ($14.25).
- Free shuttles. Capilano runs one from Canada Place and two hotels; you need proof of admission to ride back.23 Grouse Mountain's runs from Canada Place until Oct. 12.35
- Resident rates. Grouse sells a Lower Mainland rate ($74 instead of $89),20 the art gallery charges B.C. residents $29 instead of $35,24 and Capilano gives B.C. residents a free annual pass with one paid visit.22
- Book online. Bloedel and VanDusen take $1 off adult tickets bought online in advance.18,28
Before you trust other lists
- Buy Capilano tickets from Capilano. The park warns that only tickets from capbridge.com or its authorized partners are guaranteed for entry.34 While checking prices we found a look-alike ticket page on a different domain; we could not confirm it belongs to the park, so we didn't use its prices.
- One aquarium price is never the price. The adult rate runs from $41.95 to $57.95 plus tax depending on the date.15
- Seasonal listings expire. The night market is closed until next spring,38 and the Grouse Grind is closed from Oct. 13.36
- Reseller prices aren't venue prices. Tour sites list their own "from" prices, which can include fees or packages. The prices on this page come from each operator.
- Our counts have limits. They measure what people typed in 12 Reddit threads, not visits or satisfaction. One thread asked for nights out that aren't bars, which lifts theatre and comedy. Most mentions are recommendations, but not all: of the four Capilano mentions, two told visitors to go to Lynn Canyon instead and a third called the bridge "cool but VERY overrated."

How we did this
Official facts. On Oct. 7, 2026 we read each place's own page, or the City of Vancouver, Vancouver Park Board, Metro Vancouver, District of North Vancouver, District of West Vancouver, BC Parks, Parks Canada or TransLink page that covers it, and saved a verbatim quote for every price, hour and transit line. Prices are adult rates before tax unless the page includes tax. Where an operator did not publish a fixed price (Capilano sells dated tickets), we say so instead of quoting a reseller.
Local mentions. We searched r/vancouver and r/askvan for "things to do", "visiting Vancouver", "hidden gems" and "underrated" over the past year. The r/vancouver results were mostly news and photo posts, so all 12 threads we kept come from r/askvan, posted between Oct. 7, 2025 and Aug. 27, 2026, each one a request for things to do. We counted the 188 top-level comments, leaving out replies, deleted comments and bots. A comment counts once for a place however often it names it. We matched names with patterns (for example "Kits" or "Kitsilano"), then read the matches and removed false hits such as "the drive up" for Commercial Drive and "Squamish Nation" for Squamish. The tally is ours, and it counts mentions; it is not a survey and the commenters are not a sample of Vancouver residents. We don't publish usernames, and most commenters don't say where they live, so we label them "Vancouver area" because they answered in the city's ask forum.
