Things to do in Ottawa, 2026

We counted which places Ottawa locals suggest most to visitors on r/ottawa, then checked each one's official hours, prices, free times and nearest O-Train station. Prices are as of Oct. 7, 2026.

Top picks: what Ottawa locals recommend most

We read 12 threads on r/ottawa, the city's main Reddit forum, where visitors asked what to do in Ottawa between Nov. 21, 2025 and Oct. 6, 2026. We counted how many top-level replies named each place: 273 replies in all (our calculation; method below). The counts come from one forum and a dozen threads, so read them as a measure of what regulars suggest, not as a survey. Hours, prices and O-Train stations come from each operator's own website and OC Transpo, checked Oct. 7, 2026.

Food came up too: shawarma in 19 replies and BeaverTails in 7. We left food out of the picks, which cover places you can visit. Day trips outside the city have their own section.

What locals told visitors

These are anecdotes from one forum, not a survey. Commenters did not always say where they live; we quote only replies in r/ottawa, an Ottawa forum. Three patterns stood out.

Cross the river to Gatineau Park, and go early. The park was the second most-mentioned place, often with a warning about fall crowds.

“Gatineau Park is the place to go for fall colours but that's peak season and it will be very busy. It's not super easy to access on transit but there is a free shuttle.”

Day trips from Ottawa

Many replies sent visitors out of the city. Mentions, by our count: Almonte, Perth or Merrickville (9), Parc Omega in Quebec (9), Chelsea (7) and Wakefield (6) in the Gatineau Hills. How much is OC Transpo for visitors?

An adult fare is $4.10 with a Presto card or a tapped credit or debit card or phone, or $4.15 in cash, and includes at least 90 minutes of transfers. Tap-to-pay charges stop at $12.25 a day, the price of a DayPass, and children 10 and under ride free.32

How we did this

Local mentions. On Oct. 7, 2026, we searched r/ottawa for "things to do," "visiting Ottawa," "first time Ottawa" and "hidden gems," limited to the past year, and picked 12 threads by title, leaving out posts about moving, renting, jobs, dating and nightlife. The 12 threads were posted between Nov. 21, 2025 and Oct. 6, 2026 and had 273 top-level replies. Most came from visitors; one came from a couple about to move away, one from parents of two toddlers, and one from Texas visitors staying near Montebello in March, which lifts the counts for Parc Omega and other Quebec trips. For each place we counted the replies that named it, once per reply, using a list of names and common spellings (for example "the Hill," "West Block," "Senate" and "Changing of the Guard" all count for Parliament Hill, and "Pink Lake," "Meech Lake" and "Mackenzie King" count for Gatineau Park; "Ottawa Art Gallery" does not count for the National Gallery). A mention is not always praise. Replies to replies were not counted. Our scraper loaded most but not always all replies in a thread, so the counts may run slightly low.

Official facts. Hours, prices and transit come from each operator's own website, Parks Canada, the NCC, Canadian Heritage, the Governor General's office, Ottawa Tourism and OC Transpo, checked Oct. 7, 2026. Opening hours change by season; check the operator before you go.

What we didn't do. We didn't visit the places ourselves, rank restaurants or list one-off events.
