US incentives would affect Qro’s automotive industry: Kuri González

Querétaro, Qro. The initiative of the US government – to provide subsidies for the purchase of electric cars assembled in that country and with a minimum US content – would affect Querétaro, due to the correlation of its manufacturing activity and the automotive industry, said the governor, Mauricio Kuri González .

The neighboring country’s proposal, he said, could result in unfair competition, which is why the state government, through the Secretary for Sustainable Development (Sedesu), Marco Antonio del Prete Tercero, has been in contact with the federal Secretary of Economy, Tatiana Clouthier, to raise the position of the state.

“Of course it can affect QueretaroWe believe that it is an act of dumping and we have to be fighting it. The Prete engineer is in constant communication with the Secretary of Economy, to raise his hand and say that I believe this is a competitive advantage that they are having in a non-right way ”, declared the governor.

The head of Sedesu stressed that support will be given to the position raised by the Ministry of Economy; in addition to keeping abreast of the determination issued by the US government.

“We call on North American legislators to consider that there are also many North American industries like the ones we are announcing (UL’s investment announcement), which trust the Queretaro workforce, trust the capacity of the Queretaro domestic market,” he said. .

The United States, he added, should consider the prevalence of the Agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), in order to strengthen the participation of the three nations in the automotive market.

“Let’s wait to see the considerations that the North American Congress is having that consider that there is a treaty and that they allow us all to participate, that vehicles produced in Mexico participate, there are regional content rules, that those regional content rules are respected and that allow us to compete with vehicles produced in Mexico, allow vehicles in the United States to compete and finally benefit the region, ”he declared.

Competitive advantage

According to the state secretary, Querétaro has an advantage in producing auto parts that are indispensable in automotive manufacturing, including parts for platforms for electric vehicles.

“The advantage that Querétaro has is that auto parts are produced, which will always be necessary, which go for an electric vehicle platform, but they are auto parts after all, it is one of the competitive advantages of the state in this area”, referred.

The Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA) has stated that this determination would put at risk the investments of Ford and General Motors in Mexico in this market niche, as well as future investments in the matter. This move is also expected to lead to a trade war in North America.

The state’s automotive industry counts approximately 316 industry-related firms: 200 Tier 2, 104 Tier 1, seven original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), four design and research centers and a national distribution center, according to information from Sedesu and the Querétaro Automotive Cluster.
