After social organizations made public their claim for not being taken into account in the announcement of the restructuring of the Mechanism for the Protection of Journalists and Defenders, this Thursday, the Undersecretary for Human Rights, Population and Migration of the Ministry of the Interior, Alejandro Encinas Rodríguez, invited those who make up the Governing Board of the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists to initiate a process of reflection, analysis and review to reform its regulatory framework.

When leading the 101 session of the Governing Board, Encinas Rodríguez, acknowledged that “years have passed and the viability, scope and limitations in the operation of this mechanism have already been shown, and we believe that it is appropriate to carry out a thorough review to that we are up to the new requirements, “he said.

For this reason, he considered that the coordination and collaboration mechanisms of all public institutions in the three levels of government, and the Judicial and Legislative powers, have to be reassessed because, he said, the prevailing levels of impunity have not been overcome. to the attacks suffered by human rights defenders and journalists.

For his part, the head of the Human Rights Unit of the Ministry of the Interior and coordinator of the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, Enrique Irazoque Palazuelos, stressed that impunity prevails in the killings of human rights defenders ; in 99% of the cases there are no sentences and in the matter of journalists, 93%.

Therefore, he announced that there is already a rapprochement with the Congress of the Union to initiate a discussion that allows progress in the revision of the law and the reforms that are required to strengthen the mechanism, to give it greater capacity and institutional strength to define and define which ones. they are the competencies of the different orders of government and autonomous bodies and to be able to give full guarantees to human rights defenders and journalists.
