They offer Aburto protection to talk about Colosio

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador offered that his government will give protection to Mario Aburto and his relatives if he reveals additional details about the murder of the PRI presidential candidate, Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta, which occurred on March 23, 1994 in Tijuana, Baja California.

During his usual press conference, which this time was held in Mérida, Yucatán, López Obrador indicated that he would be willing to consider a matter of State if Aburto has a new version of the murder that occurred in 1994. He asked the Undersecretary for Human Rights, Alejandro Encinas, let him speak with Aburto’s relatives.

“If Mr. Aburto’s family, and he himself, have something to say about his trial that means another version of the facts and if he can express, prove, that he was tortured, that he is threatened and that for that reason he has kept silence, yes is that there is another version, the Mexican State would protect it, because we are very interested in the fact that there is no doubt, no suspicion about this unfortunate murder of Luis Donaldo Colosio. It was a vile thing that they did to him, so it would be an act of justice and for the same reason it is a matter of State if he were willing to tell his version. Full protection would be given to him, to his family, if he has something to contribute.

“Now, if things happened as they are in the trial, the only thing we are obliged to do is not to violate his human rights and that is a commitment,” he said.

For her part, the Federal Security Secretary, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, denied that Mario Aburto is incommunicado or even disappeared, as his relatives claim. The official argued that the inmate is currently studying law.

“Mr. Aburto is being held in this federal prison. At the moment he is not incommunicado, he is absolutely in good health, and we are reviewing with the legal authorities what will be the response to the recommendation made by the CNDH, ”said Rodríguez.

He said that Aburto has never been held incommunicado, to the extent that he has the opportunity – he said – to communicate with his family and other people on a constant basis. He argued that even the CNDH is aware of this.
