Olive oil is currently one of the products made in Spain with greater international prestige. I already suspected it Jose Delgado on 1932 when, by motu proprio, decided to found a small oil mill in the municipality of Loranca de Tajuña (Guadalajara). Thus began the journey of Slim Oils, a small family business that will soon turn 90 years old. Now they run it Jesus, Esteban and Alicia, three of his grandchildren, who is this 2021 have managed to touch the glory of the sector with the achievement of seven international awards who recognize the high quality of their oils. The last: two gold medals on the Athena International Olive Oil Competition, held in the city of Lesbos, on Greece.
“The history of our family business began when my grandfather, Jose Delgado, opened his oil mill in the 30’s. In that one, the olives were treated with a stone mill and a basket press. In other words, the technology of the time only allowed to treat in one day 12,000 kilos of olives. Today, in the best times of the year and with current machinery, we can treat up to 300.000 kilos”, Explains EL ESPAÑOL Esteban Delgado (Loranca de Tajuña, Guadalajara, 1959), one of the three brothers in front of the successful oil mill.
This is accredited by the seven international awards they have obtained From his olive oils premium during this year 2021. On the one hand, olive oil Fidelco Gold Arbequina has recently been awarded the gold medal of the aforementioned contest Greek, but, in addition, he has won three silver medals in three competitions held in Japan, London and China. And, on the other hand, its olive oil Fidelco Gold Coupage has also been oro on Greece and the payment on China. In addition to being incorporated into the Top 100 of the world’s oils, a ranking prepared by the prestigious Evooleum Guide. In both cases, these oils premium they cost 3,15 euros the bottle of 250 milliliters O 5,90 euros the of half liter.
But, as with the olives of the Delgado, the three brothers now they reap what their grandfather sowed and consolidated their father Fidel Delgado, second generation In charge of the company. He took the reins of Slim Oils —Also known as Fidelco– on 1975. “My father was the one who started the great transformation of the company. He went from the old way of producing oil to applying the continuous production systems, in which all processes are automated and are still being used now. Since then, our oil has only been in contact with tanks and pipes of stainless steel”, Reveals to this medium the producer Esteban.
Grow among olives
“My brothers and I, since we were children, we have always grown up between olives and oil. We have always helped our parents in everything we could. And already with 17 years we started working with him. Until the generational change took place. My father got older and gave way to us ”, he recalls Esteban, who always has in mind, like his brothers Jesus (1958) and Alicia (1964), the memory of his father.
And there were the three brothers, since the 70’s, “Leaning the shoulder”, to take forward all the oils of Fidelco. Her job ranged from helping care for the 70 hectares of olive trees that the family has to supervise the production of all the oils that the mill makes. “In the best months of the year, which are equivalent to November, December and January, every day we can produce 50 a 60,000 kilos of olive oil”, Says the businessman Esteban.
They do it from olives of all varieties: arbequina, picual … or mix, as is the case with the award-winning Fidelco Gold Coupage, which “is made with two types from olives”. Of course, not all the oil it makes Slim Oils comes from the family’s olives, but part of the production comes “from olives bought from farmers from Castilla la Mancha and of the Madrid’s community”, Indicates Esteban. Despite this, it is not easy to have any of the bottles of olive oil premium through a regular supermarket.
“For us, they are very special oils and we only launch a few 10.000 O 20,000 bottles for reference and we sell them to a select public through our own oil mill or through our Web page“, Explain Esteban. Their prices, as noted before: 3,15 euros the bottle of 250 milliliters O 5,90 euros the of half liter.
In fact, it has been this Commerce online the one that has been an oxygen balloon so much for Slim Oils as for other oil mills. “During the pandemic and because of mobility restrictions, selling through Internet It has helped us a lot. Keep in mind that the direct marketing with the final consumer ”, he explains Esteban Delgado. So now you know, if you want to try these olive oils with international recognition must visit the oil mill, located “forever and ever” in Loranca de Tajuña, or, by giving yourself a back on the net.
—Esteban, I understand that there is already a fourth generation working in this family business. Would you like me to take the reins?
—Yes, my nephew Diego, my brother’s son, already works with us and the idea is that the fourth generation will be incorporated little by little. And of course we would like them to continue the family legacy. It is already a sentimental issue because we think the idea of receiving something from our parents and passing it on to our children so that they can continue with it is very nice. Of course, the decision to do so will always be yours.
