Rogers family heads to BC Supreme Court to fight for control of board | The Canadian News

A battle for control of Rogers Communications Inc. will hit the BC Supreme Court today.

The hearing stems from a petition filed by Edward Rogers last week asking the court to declare legitimate a board he formed after being removed as president last month.

The son of the late Rogers founder Ted Rogers claims he has the power to fire and appoint board members because he is chairman of the Rogers Control Trust, which controls the votes through its 97 percent ownership of the Class A shares of the company.

His mother Loretta Rogers, sisters Melinda Rogers-Hixon and Martha Rogers and their associates say that Edward Rogers’ board is illegitimate and that the only valid board is the one that existed before his changes.

The dispute has left the telecommunications company with two boards of directors, each claiming to be in power and publicly pitting members of the Rogers family against each other.

The court case, which will decide which board controls Rogers, will be chaired by Judge Shelley Colleen Fitzpatrick.
