Car insurance in Calgary, 2026

What Calgary drivers pay, by community and postal code, from the Alberta rate board's own data; why hail makes northeast Calgary dearer; which insurers got the smallest 2026 increases; and what changes with Care-First on Jan. 1, 2027.

Calgary car insurance in numbers

There is no official average quote for Calgary. The closest thing is the Alberta Automobile Insurance Rate Board's (AIRB) premiums and claims tool, which shows what insurers collected and paid out per policy in each community and postal area. We read it on Oct. 7, 2026. Its figures are five-year weighted averages for 2021 to 2025, across all coverages.1

  1. Average premium per policy, 2021 to 2025

Calgary pays 11% more than Alberta

Insurers collected $1,890 per policy in Calgary, against $1,701 across Alberta and $1,914 in Edmonton. The gap with Alberta is our calculation.1 Calgary drivers also claimed more often: 10.31 claims per 100 vehicles, against 9.71 in Edmonton and 8.46 for the province.1

  2. Hail year

Insurers lost money in Calgary in 2024

Calgary's loss ratio for 2024 was 119.0%: insurers paid out $1.19 in claims for every $1 of premium, before their own costs. Edmonton's was 100.0% and the province's 97.1%.2 The Aug. 5, 2024 hailstorm caused $3.349 billion in insured damage, homes and cars together, in CatIQ's final estimate.3

  3. 2026 renewals

Most insurers got about 12.5%. AMA got 4.45%.

For 2026 the province let insurers raise overall rates by up to 12.5%, and most big insurers filed at or just under that. The AIRB approved 4.45% for AMA's insurer from July 1, 2026.4,5 Good drivers are protected from more than 7.5% at renewal with their current insurer.6

What car insurance costs in Calgary and nearby

The AIRB's community table lets you set Calgary against Edmonton and the commuter towns around it. Premium is what insurers collected per policy, not a quote, and it reflects the mix of drivers and cars in each place as well as the address.1

AIRB five-year weighted averages, 2021 to 2025, all coverages, read from its premiums and claims tool on Oct. 7, 2026.1 For a side-by-side on housing, jobs and weather, see our Calgary vs Edmonton guide.

Calgary's average claim cost $14,676, less than Edmonton's $16,075 and the provincial $15,943. Calgary's higher claim cost per vehicle comes from claiming more often: about 22% more often than the Alberta average, by our calculation.1 Airdrie and Cochrane drivers paid less on average than Calgary drivers. Chestermere was in between, and the AIRB counts Chestermere, Rocky View and Strathmore among the communities around Calgary that had loss ratios above 110% in the 2024 hail year.1,2

Your postal code: NE Calgary and hail

Insurers price by rating territory, and each insurer defines its own territories.7,8 We looked up 20 Calgary forward sortation areas (FSAs), the first three characters of a postal code, in the AIRB tool. The highest five-year average premium, $2,452 in T3N, was about 50% above the lowest, $1,637 in T2J, by our calculation.1

The claims column explains the pattern. In T3N and T3J, claim costs ran at 130% and 128% of premiums over the five years. In 12 of the 20 FSAs we checked, they ran between 56% and 73%.1 The AIRB's 2025 report named four northeast FSAs, T3P (Carrington), T3N (Jacksonport), T3K (Country Hills) and T3R (Sherwood), where 2024 loss ratios topped 210%. For comprehensive coverage alone, insurers there collected $39 million and paid out $420 million.2

How hail reaches your premium

Hail damage to a car is paid under comprehensive coverage, or under all perils, which combines collision and comprehensive with one deductible. Both are optional in Alberta and usually come with a deductible.9 The Aug. 5, 2024 storm produced about 70,000 vehicle claims, more than half of all claims from that storm, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada.10 In 2024, weather losses under comprehensive were 335.7% of theft losses, the AIRB found.2

The AIRB has warned that some parts of northeast Calgary, regularly hit by hail, may not be sustainably insurable for weather at prices drivers can afford, and it is watching deductible levels and the use of specified perils coverage, which can cover theft while leaving out hail.2 Alberta's take-all-comers rule, which makes insurers quote and sell to every driver, applies only to mandatory coverage, so insurers can refuse optional coverage such as comprehensive.2 Since October 2025, the AIRB has required insurers to remove underwriting limits on optional coverage before it approves any further rate increase.11

What the regulator suggests in hail areas

The AIRB asks drivers in weather-prone areas, particularly northeast Calgary, to park in a covered garage when they can, and otherwise to consider hail protectors and a weather alert service.7 Ask your insurer whether it gives a discount for indoor parking, and what your comprehensive deductible is before the next storm, not after.

Car theft in Calgary

Theft is the other big comprehensive claim. Équité Association, the insurance industry's anti-crime body, publishes theft figures for Alberta as a whole, not for Calgary. It counted a 14% drop in Alberta auto thefts in 2025, and a further 15.1% drop in the first half of 2026, the largest decrease in the country.12,13 Fewer stolen cars are coming back: Alberta's recovery rate fell from 78% in 2022 to 71% in 2025.12

Pickups dominate Alberta's most-stolen list. The 1997 to 2007 Ford F350 topped the latest list, built on 2024 data, with 220 thefts.14 The AIRB put Alberta's theft loss cost at $39.45 per vehicle in the second half of 2025, against $63.80 in Ontario.15 If you drive a pickup, ask insurers whether they require or discount an approved anti-theft device.

Who insures Calgary drivers

Calgary is the most concentrated insurance market in Alberta. TD writes 24.9% of it, ahead of Intact at 19.3%, the AIRB's mid-year 2026 report says. TD's share is built in the cities: it holds 24.2% of the Calgary and Edmonton market but 8.2% of rural Alberta.7 The table shows the rate changes the AIRB approved for each large insurer group's main Alberta company. The approvals apply province-wide, so they are the same for Calgary renewals.

Market share is each group's share of 2025 Alberta private passenger premiums.15 Approved changes apply at renewal from the date shown.5 The combined column compounds every change the AIRB approved for each group's main company in 2025 and 2026; it is our calculation. Fines are those the Superintendent of Insurance listed after its 2022–24 examination of premiums charged above approved rates, summed by group by us.16 Our Alberta car insurance guide covers each insurer's ratings, apps and record in detail.

Since Sept. 14, 2026, the AIRB has not accepted new rate filings that would change overall premiums, and it expects to issue new filing guidelines by the end of 2026.17 Over the 12 months to Sept. 30, 2026, the weighted average of approved increases was 11.83%.18

The rate cap, and what can break it

If you count as a good driver, your renewal with your current insurer can't rise more than 7.5% in 2026. For 2026 that means no at-fault claims in six years, no Criminal Code convictions in four, and no major or minor traffic convictions in three.6,4

Three exceptions matter in a city where people move often. The cap stops protecting you if you move from a lower-risk to a higher-risk rating territory, as your insurer defines it, if you add a driver with a worse record, or if you get a new vehicle.8 A new insurer is not bound by your old price at all; it can quote you its full approved rates.8,15 In the AIRB's survey early this year, 51% of Albertans said their premium rose unexpectedly even though they had no claims or convictions.19

What changes on Jan. 1, 2027

Alberta's Care-First system applies to every policy that renews on or after Jan. 1, 2027. Under the new Automobile Insurance Act you generally can't sue over injuries from a crash, with some exceptions.20,21 Medical and rehabilitation benefits go from up to $50,000 over two years to no dollar limit for eligible expenses, for life.22 The AIRB has approved Care-First rates that cut private vehicle premiums by 13.7% on average, about $297; about 88% of vehicles will pay less and 9.8% more.23,24

The grid, which caps basic coverage prices for fewer than 10% of drivers, mostly newer ones, ends on the same date with no replacement.25 In 2026 the grid's base premium for $1 million in liability in the Calgary and Edmonton territory is $3,980, after a 20% increase.26 Newer drivers on the grid should get quotes well before their first 2027 renewal. The government announced in May that a new limit will replace the good driver cap: an insurer's average increase can't exceed 5% a year, and no renewal can rise more than 10%.27

Renewing before January?

If you buy or renew between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, 2026, the AIRB expects your insurer to let you cancel and rewrite the policy with the same company between Jan. 1 and March 31, 2027, so you pay the lower Care-First price for the rest of the term. Ask for a prorated cancellation.28

What Calgary drivers report

We reread the r/Calgary threads in the Reddit collection behind our Alberta guide: 7 threads posted between Dec. 5, 2025 and Aug. 30, 2026. These are anecdotes from people who chose to post, not a survey, and we don't publish usernames. Three things stood out.

Moving across the city changes the price

Some posters said their premium changed when they moved between quadrants, which fits the AIRB's postal area numbers. One driver said an AMA employee told them that Calgary rates rank SW, NW, SE, then NE, cheapest first. We can't check that for AMA, and each insurer draws its own territories.

The same household, quotes thousands apart

A Calgary household that had to leave CUMIS posted nine quotes for the same five drivers, two cars and a house. Auto premiums alone ran from $4,282 to $12,592 a year. The poster said they used an AI chatbot to summarize the quotes, so treat the table as their own account. Another driver near Calgary got two prices for the same insurer through two brokers.

“Intact bundled won. $639/month, up from $505. … The occasional driver surcharge for a 19-year-old ranged from $382 to $3,000+ depending on carrier. Shop around.”

Small claims can follow you

The same household said two roadside tow calls were recorded as claims on its record. That is one person's account, but it is worth asking your insurer how it codes roadside calls before you use coverage for a small job.

How Calgary drivers can pay less

  • Price your renewal first. With the good driver cap, your current insurer can raise you at most 7.5% in 2026, while a new insurer can charge its full rate. Compare quotes against your renewal, not last year's bill.6,8
  • Get quotes from more than one channel. Insurers choose which brokerages can quote their products, so one broker won't see every price.7 Get quotes from a broker, from insurers that sell direct, and from any group plan you can join; APEGA, for one, offers its members The Personal's group rates.29
  • Get an AMA quote. You don't need a membership to buy AMA's car insurance, though members can save up to 20%. Its 2026 increase was the smallest of the large insurers.30,5
  • Ask about parking and the comprehensive deductible. Comprehensive is where hail claims land. Get prices at more than one deductible, and say if you park in a garage.9,7
  • Pick a driving app that can't cost you. Allstate Drivewise offers up to 30% off and Allstate says your premium won't rise because of it.31 belairdirect says risky drivers in automerit could see their premium go up, and Intact says your myDrive discount can change during the term.32,33
  • Know what your credit score can do. Insurers can't use it to price basic coverage. With your consent, they can use it for a discount on optional coverage, and a low score can't raise your premium.34
  • Ask about winter tires. AMA gives a discount for them.35

Before you trust a "cheapest car insurance in Calgary" list

No public survey ranks insurers for Calgary drivers by name, and the AIRB's own 2026 consumer survey doesn't name companies.19 Quote sites and brokers can only show prices from the insurers that let them quote, and the AIRB notes that insurers choose which brokerages can sell their products.7 The AIRB's community and postal area numbers are averages across everyone insured there; they tell you which way your address pushes the price, not what you will pay.1

If you think an insurer charged you wrongly, ask it to recheck your rating, then contact the Superintendent of Insurance, which fined 21 insurers after its 2022–24 examination of premiums charged above approved rates.36,16

Common questions

Who has the cheapest car insurance in Calgary?

No company is cheapest for every Calgary driver, because each insurer prices your postal code, car and record its own way. In 2026 the AIRB approved a 4.45% increase for AMA's insurer, against about 12.5% for most other large insurers, so AMA is worth a quote.5

How much is car insurance in Calgary?

Insurers collected an average of $1,890 per policy in Calgary from 2021 to 2025, according to the AIRB. That compares with $1,701 across Alberta and $1,914 in Edmonton. Your own price can be far higher or lower.1

Why is car insurance so expensive in northeast Calgary?

Hail. The AIRB says northeast Calgary usually takes the most damage in hailstorms. In four northeast postal areas, insurers collected $39 million for comprehensive coverage in 2024 and paid out $420 million.2

Which part of Calgary has the cheapest car insurance?

Of the 20 Calgary postal areas we looked up in the AIRB's tool, T2J had the lowest average premium per policy from 2021 to 2025 ($1,637) and T3N the highest ($2,452). Averages reflect who lives there and what they drive, not only the address.1

Is car insurance cheaper in Calgary or Edmonton?

About the same on average. The AIRB's five-year averages put Calgary at $1,890 per policy and Edmonton at $1,914. Calgary drivers made more claims per 100 vehicles (10.31 against 9.71), but Edmonton's claims cost more each.1

Does car insurance cover hail damage in Alberta?

Only if you buy comprehensive or all perils coverage. Comprehensive covers damage from events other than collisions, such as hail, vandalism, theft or fire, and usually has a deductible.9

How much can my car insurance go up in Calgary in 2026?

If you qualify as a good driver, your current insurer can raise your renewal by no more than 7.5%. Moving to a higher-risk rating territory, such as a pricier part of the city, can take you outside that protection.6,8

Will Care-First lower car insurance in Calgary?

On average, yes. The AIRB says approved Care-First rates cut private vehicle premiums in Alberta by 13.7%, about $297, for policies renewing on or after Jan. 1, 2027. About one vehicle in ten will pay more.24,23

How we did this

We started with the AIRB. On Oct. 7, 2026 we read its premiums and claims tool for Calgary, Edmonton, nearby communities and 20 Calgary FSAs, one at a time, and recorded the five-year averages it showed. We then read the AIRB's 2025 and 2026 market reports for loss ratios, market shares and its comments on hail, its list of approved rate filings, the good driver cap rules and the Care-First premium reports.1,2,7,15,5,23 Hail figures come from CatIQ, which tracks catastrophe losses for the industry, and the Insurance Bureau of Canada; theft figures from Équité Association.3,10,12

Driver accounts come from the r/Calgary threads in the Reddit collection we built for our Alberta guide; we did not run a new search. The FSA averages, the 11% and 50% gaps, the claim frequency comparison, the combined rate changes and the fine totals are our calculations from the cited figures. No insurer paid for a mention, and this page has no affiliate links. We will update it when Care-First prices take effect.
