Best car insurance in Alberta, 2026

Almost every big Alberta insurer won approval to raise its rates by about 12.5% this year, the most the rate board allows. AMA got 4.45%. We went through every rate approval since January 2025, the regulator's fines, each insurer's financial strength, the Care-First overhaul that starts Jan. 1, 2027, and what Alberta drivers say happened when they shopped around.

Our picks

No insurer is cheapest for every driver. Your price depends on where you live, what you drive, your record and how long you've been insured, and each company weighs those things its own way. These picks rest on records you can check: rate approvals from the Alberta Automobile Insurance Rate Board (AIRB), ratings agencies and the insurers' own program terms. No current customer survey ranks Alberta insurers by name, so none of these picks lean on one.

  1. Smallest rate increases

    AMA Insurance

The AIRB approved a 4.45% increase for AMA's insurer from July 1, 2026, after 4.98% in 2025.1 By our count that adds up to about 9.7% since January 2025. The other big insurers got between about 18% and 24% over the same stretch. You don't need an AMA membership to buy its car insurance, though members can save up to 20%.2 We found no current financial strength rating for AMA's insurer.

  2. Biggest insurer, A+ rated

    Intact Insurance

Intact wrote 20.8% of Alberta's private car insurance in 2025, more than any other company.3 AM Best rates its financial strength A+, affirmed in May 2026.4 Its 2026 increase was 12.49%, in line with most rivals.1 You buy Intact through a broker. Its online brand, belairdirect, got 12.50%.

A+AM Best rating, affirmed May 2026
  3. Driving app with no downside

    Allstate Drivewise

Allstate's Drivewise app works in Alberta and can earn you up to 30% off. Allstate says your premium won't increase because of it.5 Not every app works that way: belairdirect says drivers who take risks under its automerit program could see their premium go up.6 AMA's MyRide app is the other no-downside option. It gives eligible drivers up to 10% off, and your scores don't affect the discount.7 Allstate's own rates rose 12.50% in 2026.1

How the big insurers compare

The table covers Alberta's nine biggest insurer groups, which together wrote more than 90% of private car insurance in 2025, plus Peace Hills, an Edmonton insurer owned by Samson Cree Nation.3,8 The "2025 and 2026 combined" column compounds every change the AIRB approved for each group's main Alberta company in those two years, including some that take effect later in 2026. That is our own calculation. Use it to see which way prices moved, not to predict your renewal.

Market share is each group's share of 2025 private passenger premiums, from the AIRB. *Peace Hills' figure is the share on its AIRB rate page, which doesn't say what year it covers. Approved changes are for each group's main Alberta company and apply at renewal from the date shown. Why your renewal went up, and what limits it

In 2025 Alberta let insurers raise their overall rates by up to 10%. For 2026 the limit is 12.5%.15,16 Most big insurers filed at or just under it. The AIRB's weighted average of approved increases over the 12 months to Sept. 30, 2026 was 11.83%.17

Those are averages across each insurer's customers. If you count as a good driver, your own renewal can't rise more than 7.5% in 2026.16,18 For 2026, a good driver has had no at-fault claims in six years, no Criminal Code convictions in four, and no major or minor traffic convictions in three. One minor ticket, such as speeding, now disqualifies you. In 2025 one was allowed.18,15

The cap doesn't follow you

The 7.5% cap protects renewals with the insurer you already have. Another insurer can quote you at its full approved rates, so a quote elsewhere can come in far above your renewal.16,19,3 The cap also stops protecting you when you add or swap a vehicle, add a higher-risk driver or move to a pricier area.18

Plenty of drivers feel this. In the AIRB's own survey early this year, 51% of Albertans said their premium rose unexpectedly even though they had no claims or convictions.20 Since Sept. 14, 2026, the AIRB has not accepted new rate filings that would change overall premiums, and it expects to issue new filing guidelines by the end of 2026.21 Increases it approved earlier, such as Definity's from Dec. 20, still take effect.1

Some drivers had no choice but to shop. Sonnet stopped selling car insurance in Alberta in December 2024, and Co-operators' CUMIS has quoted and renewed nothing since Jan. 1, 2026.22,23 In the AIRB survey, 5% of drivers who switched said their insurer had left the market.20

What changes on Jan. 1, 2027

Alberta is replacing its at-fault system for injury claims with what the government calls Care-First. It applies to every policy that renews on or after Jan. 1, 2027.24,25 The government says it is not a no-fault model.26 Under the new Automobile Insurance Act you generally can't sue over injuries from a crash. The exceptions are claims against a driver found guilty of certain Criminal Code or traffic offences, and money losses above your benefit limits.27

  • Medical and rehabilitation benefits go from up to $50,000 over two years to no dollar limit for eligible expenses, for life.28
  • Income replacement goes from the lesser of $600 a week or 80% of gross pay, for up to two years, to as much as 90% of net income up to a yearly maximum, paid until age 65.28
  • Disputes over care and treatment go to a new Alberta Automobile Care-First Tribunal.25
  • The grid, which caps the price of basic coverage for fewer than 10% of drivers, most of them newer drivers, ends with no replacement.29
  • A new limit replaces the good driver cap: an insurer's average increase can't exceed 5% a year, and no renewal can rise more than 10%. The government announced it in May.26 We haven't yet found the legal order that sets it.

The AIRB has approved Care-First rates in 34 filings covering about 3.1 million vehicles. On average, private vehicle premiums fall 13.7%, or about $297. About 88% of vehicles will pay less and 9.8% will pay more.30,31 Young male drivers see the biggest cut, about $3,094 or 30% for the AIRB's sample profile. Motorcycle premiums roughly double.30,31

Renewing before January?

If you buy or renew a policy between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, 2026, the AIRB expects your insurer to let you cancel and rewrite it with the same company between Jan. 1 and March 31, 2027, so you pay the lower Care-First price for the rest of the term. Ask for a prorated cancellation.24

What Alberta drivers report

We collected 26 Reddit threads posted between Nov. 18, 2025 and Oct. 2, 2026 in r/alberta, r/Calgary, r/Edmonton and r/PersonalFinanceCanada, 1,722 comments in all, and read the first-hand accounts that named an insurer. These are stories, not a survey. People post when something goes wrong, and many don't say where they live, so we note which city's forum a post came from. Five patterns stood out.

Staying put often beats switching

Many posters found that their renewal, even after a big increase, was still well below what other insurers would quote. Part of that is the cap. It limits what your current insurer can add at renewal, but it doesn't limit a new insurer's quote.

“Just got my TD renewal … my rates gone up 400$ from 1600 to 2000 … the cheapest anyone else will offer me is 4K, with most being 5k+”

Moving can cost you the cap too. One driver wrote that after moving within Alberta mid-policy, the premium went up 20%.

The same driver, very different prices

Quotes for one driver often ranged by thousands of dollars, and the channel mattered. A newcomer in Edmonton said switching from TD to The Personal through a professional group cut the premium from about $555 a month to $255. A driver near Calgary said Intact quoted $2,400 a year through one broker and $1,600 through Costco's. The Personal sells through employer and association plans; APEGA, for one, offers its members The Personal's group rates.32

Getting a quote can take hours

Several posters described two-hour phone holds, paper applications, vehicle inspections and secure email accounts before they could get a price. The AIRB's survey lists difficulty reaching agents and brokers among drivers' most common complaints.20

“Spent 2 hours on hold with AMA, finally hung up. Spent 2 hours on the phone with TD insurance only to be told I need to fill out an application.”

In Calgary, the quadrant matters

Someone at AMA told one driver that Calgary rates run, from cheapest to dearest, SW, NW, SE, then NE. The AIRB's numbers back up the northeast part. In its 2025 market report, four northeast Calgary postal areas (T3P, T3N, T3K and T3R) had loss ratios above 210%, and for comprehensive coverage there, insurers collected $39 million and paid out $420 million. The report says northeast Calgary usually takes the worst of a hailstorm.33

Claims: slow answers come up everywhere

We found complaints about slow claims for most insurers and praise for some. An AMA customer wrote that a claim had gone five weeks with little word. A Calgary commenter said Allstate claims, especially write-offs, take two to three months to settle. Another, who moved back to Alberta in a hurry, said BrokerLink and Intact were great after other brokers never called back.

Insurers fined for overcharging Albertans

From 2022 to 2024 the Superintendent of Insurance examined 48 car insurers. Twenty-seven had charged some Albertans more than their approved rates. The Superintendent found the errors were accidental and confirmed that the insurers refunded the money with interest.34 It fined 21 insurers. The largest penalties went to TD's Security National ($1,000,000), Intact's Unifund ($625,000) and TD's Primmum ($500,000).14

In September 2025 the Superintendent fined Wawanesa $1,780,000, again for charging private car premiums above approved rates. In October 2024 it fined Allstate $20,500 and Pembridge $8,500 for unfair practices in handling claims. AMA's insurer was not among the 21 insurers fined after the 2022–24 exam.14 These lists can't tell you whether you were affected. If you think you were overcharged, ask your insurer to recheck your rating, then contact the Superintendent's office.35

How to pay less in Alberta

  • Price your renewal before you shop. If you qualify as a good driver, your current insurer can raise you by at most 7.5% in 2026, while a new insurer can charge its full rate. Compare quotes against your renewal, not against last year's price.18,3
  • Get quotes from all three channels. Brokers, direct insurers and group plans each reach different prices. TD and belairdirect sell only direct, so a broker can't quote them for you. Ask your employer, union or professional body whether it has a group plan.32
  • Pick a driving app that can't cost you. Allstate Drivewise and AMA MyRide give a discount without raising your price for a low score.5,7 belairdirect says risky drivers in automerit could pay more, and Intact says your myDrive discount can change or be removed during the term.6,36 TD's MyAdvantage isn't offered in Alberta.37
  • Know what your credit score can do. Insurers can't use it to price basic coverage. With your consent they can use it for a discount on optional coverage, and a low score can't raise your premium.38,39
  • Ask about a winter tire discount. Alberta doesn't require winter tires, but AMA gives a discount for them.7 TD's winter tire discount applies only in Ontario and Newfoundland.40
  • If your broker drops you, it's still a renewal. When you renew with the same insurer through a different broker, the insurer must treat the policy as a renewal, good driver protection included.41

Before you trust a "best insurer" ranking

No current survey ranks Alberta insurers by name. J.D. Power's last Canadian auto insurance study came out in February 2019. In its Alberta region, AMA and Co-operators tied for first, and Alberta had the lowest satisfaction score of the four regions.42 Those results are more than seven years old.

The Rates.ca study surveyed 12,600 customers of nine Ontario and Alberta brokerages for its 2025 edition and published no separate Alberta results. Its 2026 edition covered Ontario only.43,44 CAA Insurance, which topped the 2025 edition, has no private car rates approved by the AIRB.1 Rates.ca also sells insurance quotes.

The AIRB's own 2026 survey of 1,000 drivers doesn't name insurers, but it shows what drives people away. Poor customer service was the top reason for switching (25%), ahead of an unsatisfactory claims process (11%).20

If your insurer says no

Start with your broker or agent, then your insurer's ombudsperson; every Alberta insurer must have one. Ask for a final position letter and take it to the General Insurance OmbudService, which is free (1-877-225-0446) but can't order a settlement or review prices.35,45 For questions about how a premium was calculated, call the AIRB at 780-427-5428. For how an insurer treated you, call the Superintendent of Insurance at 780-643-2237.20,35 If you and your insurer disagree on the amount of a loss, Alberta's Insurance Act has a binding dispute resolution process.35

Common questions

Who is the cheapest car insurer in Alberta?

No company is cheapest for every driver. In 2026 the AIRB approved a 4.45% increase for AMA's insurer, far below the roughly 12.5% most other large insurers got, but your own price depends on your car, record and address.1

How much can my car insurance go up in Alberta in 2026?

If you qualify as a good driver, your current insurer can raise your renewal by no more than 7.5%. Insurers' overall increases are limited to 12.5% on average, so drivers who don't qualify can see more.16,18

Do I lose the rate cap if I switch insurers?

Yes. The good driver cap protects renewals with your current insurer. A new insurer can quote you at its full approved rates.19,3

Will Care-First lower my car insurance?

On average, yes. The AIRB says approved Care-First rates cut private vehicle premiums by 13.7%, about $297, for policies renewing on or after Jan. 1, 2027. About one vehicle in ten will pay more.31,30

Do I need an AMA membership to get AMA car insurance?

No. You can insure a private car with AMA without being a member. Members can save up to 20%.2

Does my credit score affect car insurance in Alberta?

Not on basic coverage. With your consent, an insurer can use it to give you a discount on optional coverage, but a low score can't raise your premium.38,39

What is the average car insurance premium in Alberta?

$1,903 a year for full coverage in 2025, up 8.7% from $1,751 in 2024, according to the AIRB. Statistics Canada put Alberta's average at $1,818, second only to Ontario.3,46

What is the minimum car insurance in Alberta?

$200,000 in third-party liability plus accident benefits. Most Alberta drivers buy $1 million in liability coverage.47

How we did this

We started with primary sources. We downloaded the AIRB's list of approved private passenger rate filings for the past three years, 311 in all, 194 of them for 2025 or 2026, and read the AIRB's market reports, the Superintendent of Insurance's enforcement records and the Care-First law and premium reports.1,3,14,27,30 We added financial strength ratings from AM Best and S&P where they exist.

Then we read what drivers wrote. We collected 26 Reddit threads and 1,722 comments about Alberta car insurance posted from Nov. 18, 2025 to Oct. 2, 2026, found by searching r/alberta, r/Calgary, r/Edmonton and r/PersonalFinanceCanada, and read the first-hand accounts that named an insurer. We quote people with a link so you can read the whole thread, and we don't publish usernames. These posts are anecdotes, not a survey; we use them to show what can go wrong and what to ask, not to score insurers. We also searched X for Alberta insurance posts. Most were about politics and premiums in general, so we didn't quote them.

No insurer paid for a placement on this page, and it has no affiliate links. We will update it when the AIRB approves new rates or Care-First prices take effect, and each change will go in the log below.
