Inflation in the Monterrey Metropolitan Area rises to 8,957% in March: UANL

Monterey, NL. Inflation in the Metropolitan Area of Monterey, in March 2022, with annualized figures was 8,957% and the monthly figure was 1,590%, according to the General Consumer Price Index. However, families with lower incomes lost more purchasing power, since the CPI for the low and marginal stratum, the prices of products rose 11,592 percent.

This was confirmed by an analysis of the Consumer Price Index for the Monterrey Metropolitan Area, carried out by the Center for Economic Research of the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon (UANL).

“The annual inflation, from March 2021 to March 2022, is explained by the increase in the prices of electricity, gasoline, natural and LP gas, beef and avocado, mainly. And it affects the population of the low and marginal stratum to a greater extent because these products together are more important in the consumption of lower-income families,” said Joana Chapa Cantú, director of the CIE.

He explained that as of March 2022, annual inflation persists above the 4,767% that was observed in March of last year, when there were pressures on supply and demand aggregate, generated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the third month of 2022, the war between Russia and Ukraine generated bottlenecks in the supply chains and triggered the escalation of oil prices, placing annual inflation close to the levels observed in 2017, when the highest inflation was registered in Mexico, of 10,688% due to the depreciation of the peso and increases in gasoline and LP gas prices.

On the other hand, in the period from March 2021 to March 2022, the goods that decreased in price and generated the greatest positive impact in the pockets of consumers are: potatoes, university tuition, air transport, beans and grain rice.

In the third month of 2022, the monthly inflation It was 1,590%, the highest since March 2017, when it reached 1,308%.

In the month of March of this year, what most affected inflation was the increase in electricity pricewhich includes high consumption rates, gasoline, tourist packages and expenses, the car, as well as the steak and milanesa.

Meanwhile, the inflation for the low and marginal stratum It was 0.298%, due to the rise in prices of electricity, avocado, steak and milanesa, gasoline and milk, but there was a decrease in the price of lemon, potato, soft drinks and barbecue, said Joana Chapa Cantú.
