According to sources from the Casa del Rey, the conversation between Felipe VI and Juan Carlos I took place before the king returned from the United Arab Emirateswhere his father resides, and “given the characteristics of the funeral ceremony”, the conversation took place over the phone.
The same sources indicate that both have agreed to meet in Madrid when the king emeritus comes to Spain.
King Felipe VI has embarked on his return trip to Madrid, once he has paid condolences to the new president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who has served for almost a decade as the de facto leader of the Emirates.
Felipe VI has traveled accompanied by the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Luis Manuel Cuesta.
The event was also attended by the presidents of France, Emmanuel Macron, and Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan; the kings of Belgium and the Netherlands, and the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, among other leaders.
