A speech to clarify the successes and challenges of the EU

Present the successes and announce the European challenges ahead. This is the meaning of the speech on the State of the Union held this Wednesday by the President of the European Commission.

Ursula von der Leyen praised her team’s successes in the vaccine race. The German official stresses that 70% of the adult population is vaccinated, that 700 million doses have been supplied to Europeans and as many to the rest of the world. “We did it the right way, because we did it the European way, and I think it worked“, welcomes the German official.

Ursula von der Leyen also wanted to plan for the coming months. She wants to strengthen the EU’s capacity to fight pandemics through the creation of a new body.

The President of the Commission also wants to make the continent a technological leader. For this it proposes a regulation on European chips. “We are currently dependent on chips made by Asia. So let’s put all our efforts together to improve this situation“, encourages the German.

The climate transition is one of the most delicate issues. The EU wants to become the first carbon neutral continent in 2050. But to achieve this will require political will and financial means. “We will ensure that greater climate ambition goes hand in hand with greater social ambition, because the transition must be fair“, explains the President of the Commission. She also recalls that 34 million Europeans already suffer from energy poverty.

To become a reality these promises must also gain the support of MEPs and member states. Beyond the speech, the substance of the discussions will take place behind closed doors in the institutional corridors but also in the capitals in order to find the necessary compromises.
