A house fire in Winnipeg claimed the lives of three pets early Saturday morning and left several people searching for a new place to live.

The city says the teams were dispatched to the 300 block of Victor Street shortly after midnight.

When they arrived, the city says smoke and flames were coming from the two-and-a-half-story house.

Firefighters were in and out due to the cold weather, but had the fire under control around 1:40 a.m. M.

People living in the home had already been evacuated when crews arrived, however the city says two dogs and a cat were killed in the fire.

The city’s Emergency Social Services were also called in to help former residents find a place to stay temporarily.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the fire was accidentally started while cooking without supervision.

The city says damage estimates are not yet available, however the home suffered “significant” damage from smoke, fire and water.
