Slippery Saturday: City of Calgary teams working on trouble spots – Calgary | The Canadian News

If you had to drive somewhere in Calgary on Saturday morning it was probably a bit slippery.

Due to fluctuating temperatures, icy spots are very likely. Calgary Police closed a portion of Crowfoot due to slippery roads.

In a morning tweet just after 8 a.m., CPS said they closed the northbound Crowchild Trail, between Memorial Drive and 17 Avenue SW, due to multiple collisions and adverse weather conditions.

At 11 am, the police reopened that stretch of road. However, they still urged caution.

“Please continue to slow down, be careful and leave extra space between vehicles if you are driving in (Calgary) today,” the tweet read.

City of Calgary crews are working on “hot spots” that include bridge decks, ramps and intersections on major routes.

The pickle mix, a mixture of salt and gravel that clings to ice and helps with traction, is being used throughout the city as the temperature drops below -10.

The city also said its staff is working to remove snow and ice from the Priority 2 routes, which are roads with 5,000-19,999 vehicles per day, such as Kensington Road and Acadia Drive.

At this time, the City of Calgary does not anticipate the need for parking bans on snowy roads.

In the meantime, if you’re traveling out of town or returning to Calgary, you need to be prepared for some backups.

A collision between two heading southbound semi-finals on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway near the Millet turnoff has diverted traffic. RCMP said crews are continuing to clean up the wreckage.
