Waterloo region confirms 26 new COVID-19 cases, drop in active infections

WATERLOO –

The Waterloo Region has reported 26 new cases of COVID-19 and a drop in active infections.

There are currently 230 active cases in the region, nine fewer than on Thursday.

The region has a total of 21,020 cases since the pandemic began, including 20,479 resolved cases and 308 deaths.

The 7-day rolling positivity rate for the Waterloo region currently stands at 3.3%. Earlier this week, that number was 3.5 percent.

The virus’s reproduction rate remains at 1.0 percent, the same as on Tuesday.

The Waterloo Region COVID-19 panel listed a correction in the total number of variant infections of interest, showing one case less related to the Delta strain.

Of the latest infections, four were in children nine years old or younger, three in the 10-19-year-old age group, and 10 in 20-year-olds.

Hospitalizations fell by three in the past 24 hours, and now number eight. There are currently five people receiving care in an area ICU, one less than on Thursday.

Another COVID-19 outbreak has been declared, bringing the region’s total to 10.

The breakdown of region variants is as follows:

  • 3,127 are the Alpha variant
  • 21 are the Beta variant
  • 98 are the Gamma variant
  • 3,692 are the Delta variant
  • A mutation has been detected in 262 cases, but a variant strain has not yet been confirmed.

Authorities confirm that 934,439 doses have been administered in the Waterloo region.

Among the eligible population five years and older, 79.34% have been fully vaccinated, while 83.11% have received one dose.

Regarding the total population of the region, 75.15% are fully immunized against COVID-19 and 78.71% have received a single injection.

Ontario reported over 1,000 new COVID-19 cases for the first time since May, confirming 1,031 on Friday.

The province has a total of 621,260 cases since the pandemic began, including 604,027 resolved and 10,016 deaths.

Ontario’s seven-day average now stands at 866, down from 711 at this time last week.
