VivaAerobus also seeks to land in Medellín

Last week, VivaAerobus requested the Colombian civil aviation authority for permission to operate the routes Mexico-Medellín, Medellín-México and Cancún-Medellín, Medellín-Cancún with a daily frequency, which will be added to those that it currently has to Bogotá from the very Mexican origins.

According to information from the Colombian government, the intention of the ultra-low-cost airline is to start flights during the first half of 2022 with its aircraft that are 4.6 years old.

The Mexico-Medellín route, in the case of national airlines, is currently operated by Aeroméxico and was operated by Interjet at the time. Because it is the second city with the highest demand between Mexico and Colombia, Volaris also requested authorization to serve it since February 2021, as did Cancun-Medellín, although it is not yet in operation.

“By request 2021117073 of December 23, 2021, the Aeroenlaces Nacionales company, Colombia branch, submitted a request to add the following routes to its operating permit … In accordance with the principle of publicity, this information will be published on the website of the Special Administrative Unit of Civil Aeronautics, for a term of five days to inform the interested parties ”, it was reported.

According to ProColombia, Medellín has established itself as a modern city rich in tourist, cultural and commercial activity. It has 22 museums and six library parks, more than 25 shopping centers, six gastronomic offer areas and a wide array of medical facilities that make the city a center for health tourism.

Additionally, Cancun has become an attractive destination for the inhabitants of Medellín.

Ultra Low Cost Advances

Due to the health crisis caused by Covid-19, it was the reason for several countries to put restrictions on their air operations, Colombia became the second nation with the highest arrival of international tourists to Mexico.

In this context, Colombian airlines have also found an opportunity to grow, as is the case of the ultra-low-cost company VivaAir, which already operates the Medellín-Mexico City, Medellín-Cancún and Bogotá-Mexico City routes (in the latter has an interline agreement with VivaAerobus through which each company offers the flights of both to give more choice to their customers).

In addition, it has already started the commercialization of two new routes: Cali-Mexico City and Cali-Cancun, which will start operating in March 2022.

Between January and October 2021, between Mexico and Colombia 587,674 passengers were registered, 60% higher than those registered the previous year. Avianca, Aeroméxico and Copa are the airlines that lead the operations.
