US population is growing at an all-time low in 2021

The population of U.S grew at a slower rate in 2021 than in any other year on record, as the Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated the most moderate increase the country has experienced in recent years, said the Census Bureau.

“The slow growth rate can be attributed to the decrease in net international migration, the decreased fertility and the increased mortality due in part to the Covid-19 pandemic, “the Census Bureau said Tuesday.

2021 marks the first time since 1937 that the United States population grew by less than 1 million people, reflecting the lowest numerical expansion since at least 1900, when the Census Bureau began annual population estimates.

The population of the United States increased in the last year by 392,665 people, or 0.1%, according to the population estimates of the United States Census Bureau for 2021.

The trend of a population growth slower in the country has been noticeable for several years, as a result of the decline in fertility rates and the migration net, combined with the rise in mortality due to aging population.

Between 2020 and 2021, the population of 33 states in the United States increased. A total of 17 states and the D.C. they lost inhabitants. Eleven of those 18 areas that lost population had casualties of 10,000 or more, figures released Tuesday showed.

“Aside from the last few years, when population growth slowed to historically low levels, the growth rate slowest in the 20th century was from 1918 to 1919, when the influenza pandemic and the First World War“explained Luke Rogers, chief of demographic estimates for the Census Bureau.

Since April 1, 2020, the country’s population increased from 331 million 449,281 to 331 million 893,745, an increase of 0.13%, the figures showed.

The official death toll from coronavirus in the United States is by far the highest in the world, with more than 800,000 registered deaths from the disease, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Pandemic and migration

The pandemic affected migration to and from the United States, causing the lowest levels in decades, adds the Census in another analysis.

Through June 2021, the land borders between the United States, Mexico Y Canada remained closed to non-essential travel and three-quarters of US consulates abroad, which issue visas, too.

Net international migration (less than 250,000) contrasts with the record of the last decade (1,049,000 between 2015 and 2016) and the 477,000 recorded between 2019 and 2020.

Florida, Texas, New York, California, and Massachusetts host the majority of migrants from abroad almost every year. All five registered drops between 2015 and 2021, but it was almost -50% between 2020 and 2021.

According to an analysis of the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), carried out using data from the Census Bureau’s population survey, the number of immigrants (legal and illegal) in the United States reached 46.2 million in November of this year, the highest in the country’s history .

As a percentage, immigrants represented 14.2% of the population in November, adds the CIS, a non-profit organization that studies immigrant communities in the country.

The proportion of immigrants in the population has tripled since 1970 and has almost doubled since 1990.
