Tsunami causes ‘unprecedented disasters’ in Tonga

Wellington. The huge volcanic eruption on Saturday in Tonga caused a tsunami of up to 15 meters that caused an “unprecedented disaster” in this country, destroyed homes and killed at least three people, the government said.

“An unprecedented disaster has hit Tonga,” the government said in a statement yesterday after the violent eruption of the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcano, which triggered a tsunami that “rose to 15 meters”.

In its first statement since the eruption, the government said one village was completely washed away by the wave raised by the eruption and others have only a few houses left.

At least three people have been killed and the survivors are in temporary shelters, it added.

The completely devastated village is located on Mango Island, with a census of 30 people, where the United Nations had previously tracked down a call for help.

Peru

An oil slick of at least 18,000 square meters touches beaches in the Peruvian province of Callao, following a spill in the sea that attributed the refinery in question to the waves produced by the volcanic eruption in Tonga.
