Thursday’s back-to-school announcement in Ontario sparks reactions online

Ontario Medical Director Dr. Kieran Moore revealed the province’s plan for schools to continue into the new year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first day of face-to-face classes for elementary students was delayed to January 5. He also said that teachers will be equipped with HEPA units and N95 masks.

The online reaction has started online.

NDP Education critic Marit Stiles voiced her disgust at the lackluster ad.

Stiles also wrote that he felt Ontario had missed an important detail.

Twitter user @agardensong reminded people that daycare workers don’t have the same protections and guidelines as school boards.

Annie Kidder, executive director of People for Education, wrote a thread about the ideas that should have been included in Thursday’s announcement.

Liberal education critic Kathleen Wynne wrote that she is disappointed that the province failed to fulfill a vital mandate.

Dr Naheed Dosani, a health justice advocate at the University of Toronto, believes the decision is not in the public’s best interest.
