Thousands of fake toonies have been seized in Canada after an investigation


About 10,000 fake toonies have been found and seized in Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a statement.

The report stems from an investigation that began last summer. Here’s how to tell if you suspect he has a counterfeit coin.

Fake Toonies found in Canada

RCMP identified and seized approximately 10,000 counterfeit coins, Canada’s federal and national service announced in a statement on Monday, May 9. A 68-year-old man from Richmond Hill, Ontario has been charged and will appear in court on June 2, 2022.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the arrest stems from an “ongoing counterfeit currency issue through their random sampling process.”

Police said they suspect there could be additional counterfeit coins in the currency system.

How to know if the coins are fake

In the press release, the RCMP said there is an easy way to tell if you have a counterfeit coin.

“The seized counterfeit two-dollar coins can be distinguished by their main characteristic flaw of having a ‘split toe’ on the polar bear’s right front paw that resembles a ‘claw,'” the statement read.

There are several tips Bank of Canada that you can follow if you suspect you have counterfeit money. If you think you have a counterfeit bill, the bank recommends doing the following:

  • Politely decline the bill and explain that you suspect it may be counterfeit.
  • Ask for another note and check it out.
  • Advise the person to verify the note with the local police.
  • Report a possible attempt to pass suspected counterfeit money to local law enforcement.
  • Be polite. Remember that the person in possession of the note may be an innocent victim who is unaware that the note is suspicious.

If you suspect you have a counterfeit bill after a transaction, give it to the police. If the note is real, you will receive it back, the bank explains.
