They report a “slight” rise in Covid cases

In Mexico, a “slight increase” in people infected with the SARS-CoV 2 virus, which causes the respiratory disease Covid-19, has been registered in the last 15 days, reported the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

“The Mexican Federal Ministry of Health communicated the conclusion of the priority attention phase of the pandemic, the closure of the epidemic cycle and the transition to the endemic state of Covid-19. This analysis was based on the fact that in recent weeks the number of cases has been at very low levels, as has the number of deaths.

“However, also (…) because it is continuously monitoring the status of cases and deaths, it has observed and reported that after 12 weeks of continuous decline in Mexico there has been a slight increase in cases and deaths in the last two weeks. And in the last five weeks, most of the cases are present in the groups of 18 to 29 years, followed by the group of 30 to 39 and 40 to 49.

“That is, in the groups that there is less vaccination coverage provided to other older age groups, and it has also been reported that 52% of all cases reported to date have occurred in women and 62% of deaths, in men. ”, affirmed Ciro Ugarte, director of PAHO Health Emergencies.

At a press conference to report on the status of the Covid epidemic in America, the PAHO director explained that Mexico is in “an interpandemic period.”

However, he emphasized that public health measures should not be “relaxed because we observe that there is in many countries (…) a resurgence of new variants of concern and also of sublineages that occur because there is a greater opportunity for transmission of the virus. ”.
