The US warnings about the electric reform of the 4T

As much as the government of President López Obrador insists on reducing in Mexico the concerns of the US government regarding the constitutional reform in electrical matters that was submitted to the Chamber of Deputies a few months ago, it is clear that both the government of President Biden, as well as Democratic and Republican legislators, are centrally concerned about the possibility that the initiative in question will be approved in the terms in which it has been proposed.

This was made clear by the recent visit of the Secretary of Energy of the United States, Jennifer M. Granholm, who, however, was cordial and in good spirits in the various images spread over the various meetings she held in our country. , including of course the one he held with President López Obrador and Energy Secretary Rocío Nahle, he issued a statement at the end of his visit to Mexico in which he clearly stated that in each of his meetings he “explicitly expressed the real concerns of the Biden-Harris administration communicated for the potential negative impact of Mexico’s energy reform proposals on U.S. private investment in Mexico.

But not only did she limit herself to the report of the remarks she made explicitly to question the reform, but also, in that same statement, the American official slipped a statement that was clearly contrary to the thinking of the 4T on renewable energy, per point out that “Mexico is blessed with an abundance of potential renewable energy, which, if fully realized, can generate at least 10 times the energy its own country needs, millions can create good-paying jobs, and develop an extraordinary export industry that is ready for a world that needs clean energy solutions ”.

I say this is contrary to the 4T’s thinking on renewable energy, as its spokespersons both in the field of the Executive and in the Congress of the Union have committed themselves to the role of renewable energy in the energy matrix of Mexico. questioned, in part because of their “intermittency,” in addition to being maliciously associated with presumably higher costs than those reported by the industry. That the energy minister of our neighboring country is coming to the north and pointing out the benefits of renewable energy in a statement to the Mexican government is clearly a difficult blow to digest for an administration determined to return to Mexico the energy model of the 1970s. century.

In this critical context, the response that the Secretary of Commerce and Energy, along with the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), sent to a Republican lawmaker is also inserted, where in addition to making it clear that “we have your concerns regarding the constitutional reforms proposed by Mexico and the recent actions affecting US companies and investors in the energy sector “, they confirmed that they remain committed to ensuring fair treatment for US exporters and investors.

It is therefore clear that there is indeed a clear concern in the US government about the energy reform, that although the 4T is trying to pretend that it is not aware of it, it will sooner or later grow in intensity and cause commercial tensions that will end . affecting the closure of President López Obrador’s six-year term. These real clouds in the commercial relationship will eventually force the 4T to heed the warnings coming from abroad to adapt to a large extent, a reform that is not only poorly designed and supported, but also poorly processed, due to the pretense of enforcing it without accepting any argument from the opposition.
