The US prosecutor asks for 4 years in jail vs Emma Coronel

The United States prosecutor’s office asked Judge Rudolph Contreras to apply a sentence of four years in prison, a fine of 1.5 million dollars and five years of supervised release to Emma Coronel, wife of Joaquín el Chapo Guzmán.

It was detailed, in a sentencing memorandum released yesterday, that the defendant has no criminal record “beyond instant crimes and quickly accepted” her responsibility for her actions.

“Therefore, the government believes that a 48-month prison sentence followed by a mandatory five-year period of supervision is appropriate to protect the public from future crimes by the defendant,” the document reads.

On November 30, the defendant will appear before a court in that country to hear the opinion on her sentence.

Background

On February 22, Chapo Guzmán’s wife was detained at Dulles International Airport, in Virginia, United States.

Later, last June, Emma Coronel pleaded guilty to three crimes: conspiracy to distribute drugs in the United States, money laundering and dealing with a designated drug dealer.

In the sentencing memorandum, which was sent by Arthur G. Wyatt, chief of the Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Section of the Department of Justice, as well as Anthony J. Nardozzi and Katherine A. Wagner, deputy chief and deputy director of the same unit in its Criminal Division, it details that the defendant participated in the charges from 2011 to January 2017.

“From the time the defendant (Emma Coronel) married Guzmán in 2007 to the date of her arrest, February 22, 2021, the defendant knowingly benefited from Guzmán’s drug proceeds and activity. of human trafficking in multiple ways. He received direct monetary support from Guzmán. In addition, the defendant lived, owned and controlled residences paid for by drug trafficking proceeds, which included both residential and commercial properties ”.

During his guilty plea hearing, prosecutor Nardozzi noted that Chapo’s wife helped Chapo send at least 450 tons of cocaine, 90 of heroin, 45 of methamphetamine, and 90 of marijuana to the United States.

It was also indicated that Emma Coronel was the intermediary between the members of the Sinaloa Cartel and her husband when he was in a maximum security prison in our country. He also helped plan and coordinate his escape from prison in 2015.

“The defendant delivered portions of that bulk cash to Altiplano prison staff through intermediaries in an effort to organize favorable prison conditions, including the provision of food that is not available to other inmates at the facility, and to facilitate the Guzmán’s escape from the Altiplano ”, it was indicated.
