San Diego. Almost a month after reactivating the border program Protocols for the Protection of Migrants (MPP) in El Paso, Texas, which forces asylum seekers to wait in Mexico for U.S. immigration hearings, the U.S. government expanded to San Diego , California, Trump-era politics according to a federal court order.
Democratic President Joe Biden tried to scrap the policy of his predecessor Donald Trump, also known as ‘Remain in Mexico’, shortly after taking office last January.
But after Texas and Missouri sued, a federal judge ruled that he had to be reinstated. Biden restarted the program on December 6 in El Paso, Texas.
On Monday, 36 migrants were taken to immigration court in that county, the first to have their hearings under the reinstated program, officials said.
Last week, the government asked the United States Supreme Court if it needed to continue implementing the program. Under the policy, implemented by former President Trump, migrants arriving at the US-Mexico border to seek asylum must wait in Mexico for their cases to be decided, rather than being allowed to wait for their hearings in the US.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in October that the Trump program had “endemic flaws” and “unjustifiable human costs.”
The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, has called for the program to be ended, saying it puts asylum seekers at risk and damages their due process rights.
