The US commits itself to the Mexican business sector to monitor the execution of the labor reform


The government of United States will be vigilant of the execution of the labor reform in Mexicofor which it made a commitment with the Mexican business sector to work hand in hand for its implementation as required by the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (USMCA).

The undersecretary of Department of Labor, Julie A. Sumet with the president of the Business Coordinating Council (CEC), Francisco Cervantes Diazwhere they agreed to implement the labor reform.

Within the framework of the US official’s work tour, the CCE reported that the business sector has carried out numerous training sessions and seminars in the country to sensitize Mexican employers on the reform of the law and the labor provisions of the USMCA. Likewise, he has prepared diagnostic materials that a significant number of companies have already used to promote and accelerate the implementation of the reform.

Through a statement, the private body commented that the US undersecretary showed her government’s willingness to continue collaborating with the Mexican private sector in the implementation of the T-MEC and the labour reform.

Julie Su highlighted that new tools from projects funded by the DOL (US Department of Labor) are generating support for employers to ensure strong compliance with labor rights.

The undersecretary and the president of the CCE agreed that the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), in force since July 2020, lays the foundations for the economic competitiveness of the North American region and generates favorable conditions for the Job creation in both nations. To this end, the CCE and its organizations undertook to respect the rights of freedom of association and collective bargaining of all workers and not to interfere in the legal exercise of these rights. Meanwhile, he highlighted neutrality in representation with respect to decisions made by workers regarding their rights to form, join or not join, or vote for a union of their choice, and refrain from any act that puts an organization in advantage over another.

The CCE agreed that the companies will accept the results of the votes in the union electionsin the voting to approve changes in the collective agreements and in the legitimation of the workers of the collective agreements.

Also, employers will promote a broad social dialogue to promote a better application of the reform.
