The short and medium-term challenges of Feijóo as a substitute for Casado

In the absence of final confirmation, Alberto Nunez Feijoo will appear at the extraordinary congress to lead the PP. And the support expressed by all the regional barons guarantees that he will take control of the party in a extraordinary national congress, to be convened next Tuesday. With this scenario on the table, and waiting for Paul Married finish defining his last steps, the president of the Xunta is already beginning to draw up plans with his closest collaborators to face the first challenges that he will have as the new head of the PP.

The first decision that Feijóo will have to make is to choose the spokespersons for the formation. Both in the Congress of Deputies and in the Senate. Cuca Gamarra and Javier Marotto, the current spokespersons, respectively, abandoned Casado these days and it remains to be seen if now the Galician leader wants them to continue to lead these functions. At least temporarily. Feijóo could keep both or decide to put in two new people of his close confidence, chosen from among the current deputies and senators.

Feijóo is also studying what to do once he has the reins of the PP. Above all, from where to do it. Two paths open before the more than likely next popular leader: stay in front of the Xunta of Galicia and dividing the time between the regional presidency and that of the party -something unlikely due to the high demand demanded by the day-to-day training-; or leave the Xunta and go to the upper house as a senator by autonomous designation and rival Pedro Sánchez in the two government control sessions that are held each month.

This second option wins integers. The leadership of the party would force Feijóo to settle in Madrid and his presence in the Senate would be much easier to reconcile than the presidency of Galicia. His departure from the Xunta would lead to the cessation of his entire government, which would remain in office until a new president was inaugurated to configure his cabinet. The current first vice-president of the Xunta, Alfonso Ruedais among the most likely to replace Feijóo.

Ayuso, Monago and the future regional leaders

The organic life of the party also rises among the challenges that Feijóo must overcome. Specifically, appease Isabel Díaz Ayuso and launch the Madrid regional congress that the regional president has been demanding for months. Casado’s reluctance to set a date for this process and his refusal for Ayuso to take over the presidency of the PP in Madrid were the germ of the battle that the party has experienced these days.

The matter was present in the conversations that the president and the Galician leader held on Sunday, when both came to the conclusion that Casado should leave the leadership of the PP. Ayuso told Feijóo that she would not attend the urgent congress, but he reminded her that she is still waiting for the PP congress in Madrid to be held as soon as possible.

On the horizon is also the call for the regional congress of the PP of Extremadura to elect the replacement of Jose Antonio Monago, if he does not decide to reappear. The Extremaduran leader announced last Monday that he will not start this process until the party “get back to normal“. Regardless of the date, this will be one of the first appointments in which Feijóo will have to point out the future leaders of training.

What to do with Vox in Castilla y León?

Not everything will be internal challenges. The president of the Xunta will have to establish the position of the party regarding the alliances with Vox before the negotiation to form a government in Castilla y León. The day after the elections on February 13, Casado rejected a coalition Executive with the ultra party. Ayuso, on the other hand, was favorable. Feijóo must, therefore, set a clear course and open the doors to an agreement with Vox or explore other ways to prevent the ultra party from touching power. If the president of Galicia has won something in this challenge, it is that his was one of the few territories in which Vox did not enter the regional Parliament.
