It is my great pleasure to announce the return of History Through Our Eyes, one of the most popular features I can remember in the Montreal Gazette.

In 2019, we launched the History Through Our Eyes project as a daily look at life in Montreal in the 20th century. The “Eyes” were so popular that they were compiled into a large-format book of the same name, published by Véhicule Press around this time last year.

Although the original project was a one-year initiative, we always intended to get back into function. However, like the rest of the world, COVID-19 derailed us. We have been working from home since mid-March 2020 and have not had access to the extensive photographic archives printed at our Peel St. offices.

However, editorial page editor Edie Austin, Eyes’ chief architect, has come up with a solution that allows us to access many of our photo archives. So the eyes are back as a weekly show, starting today. They will appear in print on Mondays on page A2 and online under the label “History Through Our Eyes.”

Today’s cover photo of members of the Royal Canadian Artillery in Montreal in 1945 is bound to whet your appetite for what is to come next year. Because the Eyes appear weekly instead of daily, we have selected events that took place in the corresponding week in the past. We’ve also expanded the scope to include news from the early 21st century.

A quick update to the History Through Our Eyes book, which is still available online and at local bookstores – as was the case last year, if you buy the book through our Shopify account, a portion of the purchase price will be contributed to Montreal. Christmas Gazette background.
