The opposition wants Montreal to host the Canadian Water Agency

The official opposition in Montreal wants the city to submit its bid to host the head office of the Canadian Water Agency, which should see the light of day by the end of the year.

The elected representatives of Ensemble Montréal believe that the arrival of this body would promote the creation of new jobs and place the metropolis “at the heart of essential collaboration and governance” for water management.

“We are bordered by one of the most important rivers in North America, the St. Lawrence. Water is part of our identity in Montreal, it’s in our DNA. Hosting the Canadian Water Agency would complement what we are already doing,” said Alan DeSousa, Mayor of the Borough of Saint-Laurent.

The party believes that with some of the laboratories attached to the Cégep de Saint-Laurent, Montreal already has a pool of expertise that could be put to good use.

Ensemble Montréal will make a formal request at the next city council, on May 16, by proposing the vote on a motion to this effect.

On the side of the Plante administration, it is indicated that the party will debate this motion.

“Actions to counter climate change are at the heart of our decisions. We will continue to work to find solutions and protect our water, an invaluable resource,” said Alicia Dufour, attached to the office of the mayor.

In 2019, the Government of Canada committed to establishing a Canadian Water Agency that “will work to find the best ways to ensure that our water remains clean and healthy and that this resource is well managed”. Since then, the process has continued, with the federal government having held public consultations to this effect.
