The Indian Outdoor Learning Center opens near Candle Lake, Sask. -Saskatoon | Globalnews.ca

A new camp revolving around education on land has been launched at the Hannin Creek Center for Applied Research and Education near Candle Lake, Sask.

The Saskatchewan Polytechnic, the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF), and the Prince Albert Grand Council have been collaborating on the project, and four tipis were erected on June 15 for the new Indigenous Outdoor Learning Center.

“The new center will be called mitho askiy kiskēyihtamowin, which is believed to mean good learning through experiences on earth,” says Larry Rosia, president and CEO of Sask Polytech.

“This is an exciting collaboration that will focus on land-based learning and provide cultural awareness training and education on the customs and history of indigenous peoples. We are delighted to have the Prince Albert Grand Council and the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation as partners in this important hub located in northern Saskatchewan.”

Instructors will teach students and camp participants how to live off the land, learn from the land, and live in harmony with the land.

“This is a continued expansion of the original vision that brought Saskatchewan Polytechnic and SWF together; to grow and foster education, research, opportunities, and cultural and historical advancements,” says SWF President David Yorke.
