The Edmonton Humane Society offers discounted animal adoptions

Sixty-seven adoptions took place during the week, an increase of almost 33% compared to the average weekly number.

The goal is to encourage people who are planning to get a new companion, to come and meet the adoptable animals of the shelter according to the CEO of the’Edmonton Humane Society (EHS), Liza Sunley, in a statement.

The operation is organized just before the busy period of the year, when the establishment receives a large number of animals during the summer. Adopting animals will make room for the next animals that may need help.

We currently have over 60 animals including dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, rabbits and guinea pigs looking for new loving families.she wrote.

The center, which accommodates 200 animals, explains that it constantly monitors its capacity so as never to exceed levels that would jeopardize the quality of animal care.

When you adopt, you experience the unconditional love of a pet, while helping an animal in need. Plus, it frees up space in our shelter so we can accommodate the next animal that needs our help.explains Liza Sunley.

Separately, the animal shelter recently reopened to walk-in visitors after operating by appointment since the pandemic began. Potential adopters can now view animals and initiate the adoption process in person or online.

Adoption process

After submitting an adoption application, a consultation and a meeting are organized. The goal is to look at the behavior as well as the needs of the animal, making sure the adoption fits both the people and the animal.

Adoption fees cover the cost of caring for the animal as well as its vaccination, microchipping and sterilization.

Nevertheless the CEO warns those who wish to adopt too quickly, it’s a big decision to decide to add a pet to your familyshe recalls.

Be really honest with yourself about whether or not you have the time and resources to devote to this animal. »

On the parking lotEdmonton Humane Society, Brenda Young observes the ball of vehicles arriving in large numbers. She sees this operation in a good light, because it multiplies the adoptions, according to her.

Everyone should have an animal in their life. It is very enriching. Having a well-behaved dog with you is a nice thing.she thinks.

An animal’s place is in a house and not in a shelter. »

For Larry Bonk, adopting a dog means being ready to take care of it and take it for walks every day.

Larry Bonk didn’t want to miss this opportunity and what he thought was the last day of this operation. This is his fourth adopted dog. I prefer to adopt the older dogs and let the children have the puppieshe says.

Older dogs are already trained and clean. They are not as energetic as puppies, but they do need care. And we love caring for them. »

Nevertheless, he underlines the harmful effects that this type of operation at a reduced rate can also generate. You have to be willing to spend some money to prove you really want a dogdoes he think. I’ve seen people adopt a dog and not take care of it. You have to take them for walks and things like that.
