According to Statistics Canada, the population of Quebec officially passed the milestone of 8.5 million people in 2021, up 4.1% since the previous census in 2016.

Indeed, according to the data, Quebec has gone from 8,164,361 inhabitants in 2016 to 8,501,361 in 2021.

However, during the same period, the Canadian population rose from 35,151,728 to 36,991,981 inhabitants, an increase of 5.2%.

In doing so, the demographic weight of the Belle Province continued to decline, with Quebecers making up only 22.98% of the Canadian population, compared to 23.23% in 2016.

This new finding confirms a long-standing trend in the province. During the 1996 census, the day after the second referendum, the demographic weight of Quebec was still 24.75%, while it was 38.47% during the very first census in the country, in 1851.
