The decision not to land in Santa Lucia is only in the short term: Aeroméxico

Merida, Yuc. Aeromexico’s decision not to land in St. Lucia “It is decisive for the moment, but that does not imply that in the future cchange depending on better conditions market ”, he assured Jose Zapata, vice president of airline sales.

“Our decision is decisive, but it is in the short term, everything can really happen, at the moment there is no plan with Santa Lucia,” said the manager.

Whether the company changes its position will depend on the potential demand that exists around the new airport, “there may be a market there, which for the moment we have not seen, why would we put airplanes there at this time, if there is no one with whom? to fly? “, he asserted at the end of the Connectivity and Aviation Challenges conference, which was part of the program of the Mérida Tourist Tianguis 2021.

During his presentation, he explained that the airline has already recovered 100% of the national market and 75% of the global market, which is a positive balance after the collapse in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Part of this recovery is also the projection of 13,600 flights that add 1.9 million seats distributed in 80 national and international routes, in addition to an expansion of operations towards Terminal 1 of the Mexico City airport, with 20 daily flights and a gradual increase as demand requires it, explained the manager.

Increase in costs

During the same conference, the general director of Volaris, Enrique Beltranena warned about an eventual increase in the cost of plane tickets in the event that they stop charging for hand luggage, as required by the Federal Consumer Prosecutor’s Office (Profeco ).

The manager assured that the operating costs of a flight are calculated based on the amount of fuel necessary to mobilize the weight of an airplane, so scheduling a flight with the expectation of a certain number of passengers and their corresponding volume of luggage It implies supplying a certain amount of jet fuel for that calculated weight, regardless of whether or not the passenger ultimately carries 50 kilos of suitcases included in the rate.

According to the manager’s calculations, stopping charging for luggage could increase the costs of a plane ticket by up to 65%.

On another topic, he reported that Volaris will close this 2021 with a growth of 125% in the volume of passengers mobilized compared to 2020 and 25% compared to 2019, that is, prior to the pandemic
