The consumer price index in the metropolitan area is the highest since June 2001: UANL

Monterey, NL. The general consumer price index in Monterrey registered an increase of 8.47% at the annual rate in April 2022; that is, its highest level of inflation since June 2001, when it stood at 8.60%, indicates the Economic Research Center of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León.

“The data for last April denotes an intensification of inflationary pressures that can be attributed to a large extent to the double-digit increase in the prices of food, beverages and tobacco (12.70%), to the annual rebound in the transport price index ( 7.70%) and the annual inflation in the concept of housing (5.30%)”, mentions the study on the economic indicators of Nuevo León.

It should be noted that there is a high and growing inflation in the line of other services (9.35%) per year.

In March of this year, the general index showed a variation of 8.22%, while in 2021 it represented a rise of 3.52 percent.

By origin of goods, the consumer price index in the secondary economic sector increased at an annual rate of 10.18% in April 2022; 9.79% in March and 8.66% in the same month of 2021.

“This result is explained in part by the strong annual increase in producer prices for intermediate-use goods and services in manufacturing industries,” he stressed.

In addition, the wide opening of services pushed up the consumer price index in the tertiary economic sector with annual variation rates of 4.08% in January; 4.78% in February; 4.69% in March and 5.04% in April of this year.

It is worth mentioning that in the graph the lowest annual variation was in March 2020, when the confinement due to the pandemic began.
