The prosecution and the Generalitat have reduced their request for a sentence to a fine of up to 1,090 euros for four young people tried accused of the attack, shouting “shitty Moors”, on a center for unaccompanied minors in Castelldefels (Barcelona) in March 2019. Both the Prosecutor’s Office and the Ministry of Social Rights have accepted the agreement at the proposal of the defense lawyers of the raiders. the NGO Immigration and Refugee Assistance Networkpersonified as a private prosecution in the case, accuses the Government of “agreeing with racists”.
In the second section of the Barcelona Court, the trial for the four defendants, for whom the prosecution initially requested eleven months in prison and a fine of 9,900 euros, and the Generalitat seven and a half years in prison or, alternatively, one year in prison and a fine of €10,200. The defenses of the four defendants had reached an agreement in accordance with the prosecution and the Generalitat, by virtue of which the defendants recognized the facts and accepted a sentence for the minimum fine. The popular accusation, exercised by the Spanish Immigration and Refugee Aid Network, has been unmarked and has forced to hold the trial.

The defendants have acknowledged that on March 9, 2021, at 9:00 p.m., they went to the affected center with large sticks and stones with the intention of “undermining the dignity” of unaccompanied foreign minors who were in the center “contempt for their ethnic and national origin”. Rafael Escudero, spokesman for the Immigration and Refugee Aid Network, has been outraged at this situation. “What hope of justice do we have left when the Government of the Generalitat de Catalunya prefers to agree with those who attack shouting, ‘shitty Moors’ and refuses to prosecute the obvious hate crime? What message do we send as a society?” He asked himself. “As much pact against racism and cordon sanitaire to the extreme right, the Generalitat is agreeing with racists”, has insisted. For their part, sources from the Conselleria de Drets Socials brand the act “execrable”, but assure that they have accepted the pact because the statements of the accused were contradictory and there was a evidentiary difficulty that put the conviction at risk.
