Life and love created a series of challenges for the dedicated midwives of Nonnatus House in Sunday’s installment of call the midwife.
No challenge was greater than Nurse Lucille’s heartbreaking miscarriage on the beloved PBS series. She and her husband Cyril were so happy and excited about the arrival of their unborn baby that they worked together to make sure the child was cared for and adored.
Ever determined to join the professional class, Cyril kept submitting his résumé and Lucille continued to work, but confided to Nurse Phyllis and Cyril that she would eventually have to transition to a health consulting job that could provide more convenient hours for her. a working mother.
Phyllis immediately understood Lucille’s concern, but Cyril felt threatened by Lucille’s choice. He was worried that she didn’t think he was a good provider. Lucille told Cyril that her decision to finally leave her midwifery had less to do with him and more to do with her desire to continue working. The two argued and Cyril stormed off.
Cyril went down to the docks to clear his mind and was forced to move by a prejudiced white policeman. The next morning, when Cyril returned home, Fred handed him the letter he had been praying for: a job offer in civil engineering. Relieved, Cyril bought Lucille a bouquet of roses and headed straight to her house to apologize.
Lucille also apologized, and everything seemed to be going perfectly until Lucille delivered her patient Amy’s baby and realized she was bleeding herself. The midwife completed the delivery (Amy gave birth to a beautiful baby girl) and called Nurse Phyllis, who immediately arrived and coaxed Lucille into bed.
As Nurse Phyllis completed the final steps of Amy’s labor, Lucille realized her dreams of motherhood would have to wait when she learned the tragic truth in the bathroom. Both she and Phyllis cried and the elderly midwife called an ambulance because Lucille was bleeding too much.
Cyril went to visit Lucille while she was recovering in St. Cuthbert’s Hospital and wisely told her that it wasn’t about regrets, because he was grieving too, but about hoping that something good would happen to help them overcome their sadness. . An animated Lucille smiled at Cyril and it was clear that they would find a way to get over losing her.
Meanwhile, Nurse Trixie dealt with some tragedies of her own. To begin with, she was disappointed that she had not realized that Glenda Packer was physically abusing her husband Gordan Packer, a paraplegic who had left the hospital early, as well as her children. Trixie had seen the bruises on Gordan’s back, but she mistook them for bedsores.
But after Deborah, the oldest daughter of the Packers, told her teacher and eventually Trixie what was going on at home, the midwife learned the awful truth and immediately contacted the NSPCC and an officer intervened. Later, Trixie and the officer saw Glenda threaten her son David with the same dog leash that Deborah said her wife and mother used to beat them with, and Gordan confirmed the allegations were true. Worse, Gordon said, they didn’t even have a dog.
Glenda was arrested and Gordon got custody of their children. Just as Trixie was beginning to recover from her work problems, she received the terrible news that her godmother in Italy was dying and she rushed to her side. Trixie also told Matthew to wait for her and “keep her life warm”, and Matthew said that she was only a train ride away if Trixie ever needed him in Italy.
Meanwhile, Phyllis, who had inherited her mother’s £5,000 in premium bonds, set out on her own adventure and eventually used up most of the holiday time she had accumulated.
Phyllis embarked on a six-week cruise and tried to convince her best friend, Miss Higgins, to go with her, but unfortunately the secretary’s seasickness kept her from it. So, Phyllis went off to enjoy an unexamined life, but not before promising a triumphant return soon after.
