NASCAR weather updates: Will rain in Bristol end Sunday’s Cup race early?


NASCAR Cup Series drivers have already struggled to compete on the dirt track at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday night. Before long, they could be driving in the mud.

Rain has threatened to end Sunday’s Food City Dirt Race early as it heads into the area. The race is official, at least 125 of the scheduled 250 laps have been completed, and may be canceled if the race cannot be resumed.

22:40: NASCAR believes it won’t be long before racing can resume.

22:34: The packing cars are coming out to try to dry the track.

22:32: It doesn’t look like the current rain cell is going to leave the Bristol area for a while, according to The Weather Channel. At this point, NASCAR is likely just hoping it can be light enough to allow drivers to run the remaining 28 laps.

22:31: Drivers have not left their cars. If racing can resume, it would still take another 20 minutes for NASCAR to dry the track.

22:28: This race goes back to red with 28 laps remaining. Reddick is currently the leader, and would win if called official.

21:43: The engines have been restarted. This race is going to resume.

21:36: The drivers return to their cars.

21:22: The rain is still falling on the track, but now it is much lighter than before.

21:09: There is optimism that this race will be green again, according to the Fox broadcast. the rain goes away enough to give NASCAR a chance to run the race.

21:02: It’s still raining on the track. Radar doesn’t show much of a reprieve, although it could at least be a bit lighter.

20:46: Bell’s tires skidded on the track and several cars were forced back onto pit road. The race is still under red flag, but the track doesn’t look good.

20:41: The weather is certainly not looking good for the rest of the night. the weather channel has a lot of green in the Bristol area and reports that rain is expected during the next few hours.

20:36: Chase Briscoe, who won the second stage, was told by radio to expect rain at this point. The race has gone around enough laps, and it could be official if it ended.

What channel is NASCAR on today?

Fox in the US and TSN in Canada will host the Food City Dirt Race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Last Sunday’s race at Martinsville, Virginia was run by FS1, but the next two races will be run by Fox before the series returns to FS1 on May 1.
