The participants said they achieved their goals after demanding the university completely divest itself of investments in fossil fuels by 2025.

About 30 of them had erected tents in a hall of the Roger-Gaudry pavilion and one began a hunger strike.

A petition collected 4,400 signatures and five student associations launched strikes to pressure the university to sell any shares in fossil fuel companies.

A spokesperson of the Écothèque group announced Saturday that rector Daniel Jutras would propose a plan by June 1 to divest all directly and indirectly held shares by 2025. The university, which did not respond to a request for comment, has $14 million invested in the industry through its endowment.

Pension investments are managed independently and are not affected by this move.

Students also praised the university’s transparency in pledging to be more open about where exactly its endowment is invested and opening a direct line of communication with the rector.
