Montreal’s transit agency is running a pilot project to replace side mirrors on buses with screens that display camera images.

“By providing better visibility, they help reduce blind spots and expand our drivers’ field of vision. A winning and safe combination for all”, said the Société de transport de Montréal.

Two buses will run with the screens mounted inside the driver’s side window and two cameras mounted outside. The agency said that in addition to providing a better field of vision, it offers better visibility in difficult conditions and showed improvement during tests on a closed course.

Both cameras come with a system that blows air over them to clear any obstructions blocking the lens.
