Spain registers the highest incidence in the entire pandemic: more than 1,200 points

  • Cases skyrocket to 214,619 cases since Thursday as the omicron variant gains presence

After the Christmas holidays, the autonomous communities have notified the Ministry of Health this Monday 214,619 new cases of covid-19 since Thursday. And, after a week breaking records of daily infections, Spain has arrived at the highest cumulative incidence level throughout the pandemic: 1,206.21 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

If the comparison is made with last week, there is a considerable difference: 79,704 positives last Monday and an incidence of 911.31 points, data that show the great upward trend in the evolution of the pandemic and the sixth wave with the arrival of the new omicron variant.

In this Monday’s report they have been added 120 new deaths, compared to 85 last Monday. Up to 88,793 people with a positive diagnostic test have died since the virus arrived in Spain, according to data collected by the Ministry. In the last week, 200 people with a confirmed positive covid-19 diagnosis have died in Spain.

Hospital occupation

Currently, there are 9,530 patients admitted for covid-19 throughout Spain (7,924 Thursday) and 1,715 in the ICU (1,515 Thursday). In the last 24 hours, there have been 1,380 admissions (1,135 Thursdays) and 534 highs (929 Thursday). And the occupancy rate of beds occupied by coronavirus stands at 7.69% (6.40% Thursday) and in ucis at 18.26% (16.27% Thursday).

Between December 7 and 27, the autonomous communities have performed 2,230,127 diagnostic tests, of which 1,267,340 have been PCR and 962,787 antigen tests, with an overall rate per 100,000 inhabitants of 4,742.31.

Meanwhile, the positivity rate stands at 17.94%, down from 14.65% on Thursday. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that this figure be below 5% to consider the spread of the virus as ‘controlled’.

Omicron spreads

Surpassing 2,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days, Navarra (2,339) and La Rioja (2,145) are the communities with the highest incidence, with the Basque Country touching 1,921 cases and another eight autonomies over a thousand.

Health has explained that the delta variant, predominant until December 2021, is being displaced by the omicron and the first evidences indicate a escape immunity and a higher transmissibility than for the first. Thus, there is a community transmission and rapid growth in recent weeks.

Random samples using specific PCR have detected between December 13 and 19 -with data from 13 communities- percentages between 3.1 and 54.8%, compared to the arc of between 43.8 and 92.5% of the delta. Thus, in Madrid and the Canary Islands the new variant is already the predominant one.

In addition, through sequencing, from December 6 to 12, the omicron percentage stood at 27.4%, while that of the delta was 70.3%.
