Spain closed 2021 with the lowest number of unemployed since 1996

The number of unemployed in Spain registered the largest drop in its history in 2021, with 782,232 fewer unemployed in a year, thanks to the economic reactivation after the pandemic, the government announced on Tuesday.

According to the Ministry of Labor, the country had never experienced such a marked year-on-year decline since the beginning of the historical series in 1996. In total, 3,105 million people were registered as job seekers in Spain at the end of December. “It is the lowest figure” for this month since 2007, the ministry explained in a note.

With the decline in December, the number of unemployed registered its tenth consecutive monthly decrease, with 76,782 fewer job applicants compared to November, which implies a drop of 2.41 percent.

“Unemployment goes down and has already chained 10 consecutive months of declines, something that had not happened in the entire historical series. The data once again reflects the progress of the recovery in Spain,” celebrated the president of the government, Pedro Sánchez, in his account from Twitter.

“Thanks to this drop,” the ministry said on its side, “there are 140,142 fewer unemployed than at the beginning of the pandemic.” Unemployment is also on the decline in all Spanish regions.

Youth unemployment, traditionally high in Spain, fell by 143,809 people in the last ten months. In total, 222,594 under-25s were registered as unemployed at the end of December, the lowest figure ever recorded for this month.

Spain, with an activity highly dependent on tourism, was one of the western economies hardest hit by the consequences of the pandemic in 2020, when it registered a 10.8% drop in its GDP. The country ended that year with half a million more unemployed, mainly in the tourism and hospitality sector.

Spain added 70,814 net jobs during the month.
