Snowy, windy conditions hitting Winnipeg for 1st part of February: meteorological – Winnipeg | The Canadian News

Just when we thought we were through the worst, Mother Nature Manitobans reminded us that the season is not quite over yet.

A winter storm surge is in operation for Winnipeg and much of southern Manitoba, requiring a spill of more than 10 centimeters Monday night through Tuesday.

The snowfall, combined with a forecast of a strong northwesterly wind, means visibility is also likely to suffer due to blowing snow – and with a high Monday in the low single digits, there is a possibility of icy rain as well.

Retired meteorologist Rob Paola told 680 CJOB Manitobans to expect similar weather conditions for the first part of February.

“Over the next week or two, it looks like more of the same,” he said, “with generally below-normal temperatures and occasional flashing systems that provide additional snowfall.”

If there is a silver lining in all this snow, Paola said, it is that the extra rainfall will help reduce the moisture shortage in the region.

“It definitely helps,” he said. “The snow pack is up to about 40-45 centimeters in Winnipeg and the Red River Valley.

“Compare that with last year, when our snow depth never got above 20 centimeters.”

The City of Winnipeg says its teams are ready to respond to the expected snowfall.

In a release Sunday, the city said it is monitoring road conditions, and its teams are ready and waiting to apply sand to roads as needed.

“Snow accumulations will be monitored and further decisions will be made as the weather system moves through the city.”

Winnipeggers should also be aware that the city’s annual snow route parking ban is in effect, meaning vehicles traveling between 2 and 7 a.m. parking on snowy trails can receive a ticket or be towed.
