Small traders foresee a prolonged January slope

With the recent hikes in fuel taxes and inflation, the National Alliance of Small Merchants (Anpec) foresees a prolonged January slope that will become a complicated situation for consumers due to the increase in prices in the basic basket and the pandemic caused by the Ómicron.

“The increase in the Special Tax on Products and Services (IEPS) that was activated last January 1, is already reflected in the increase in prices of soft drinks, box bread, gasoline, cigarettes, but the worst thing is that it is outlining increases soon to fruits, legumes, vegetables, groceries, toilet paper, personal hygiene items, cleaning, meat, sausages, among other items ”, alerted Anpec.

This start of the year 2022, Mexicans will live a prolonged January slope, as there is a wave of increases in various items, food and fuel, not counting the effects of the appearance of the Covid-19 Omicron variant that impacts the economy of the country, said the president of Anpec, Cuauhtémoc Rivera.

“The update of the IEPS to gasoline, diesel, cigarettes and flavored beverages unleashed the price hike at the start of this year in many essential consumer products, even since the last days of December last year,” he stated.

According to the reports of small merchants, among the most sensitive increases are: the pack of cigarettes went from 66 to 70 pesos, which increased between 1 and 2 pesos, depending on the presentation; sweet bread and pastries, snacks, and flavored drinks; 2 pesos for box bread; as well as gasoline prices rose on average 1 peso and diesel 1.20 (national average).

This avalanche of increases outlines a string of increases to come in the segments of fruits, legumes, vegetables, groceries, toilet paper, personal hygiene and cleaning articles, eggs, dairy, sausages and meat, among others.

Anpec warned that winter, the new Covid-19 variant Ómicron and the prolonged drought are leading us to a difficult start to the year 2022, to say the least.

“This trend is consolidated by the virulent fourth wave of Covid-19, Ómicron, which is spreading at a speed never before experienced by humanity in any pandemic; Beyond the lethality or not of this attack, the truth is that it is making the population sick and thereby hacking the economic activity of society ”, explained the president of ANPEC, Cuauhtémoc Rivera.
