In April, Lakeshore OPP officers arrested a man before he fell into medical trouble and was taken to hospital for treatment for a drug overdose, an SIU statement said Wednesday.

The man was returned to the OPP Lakeshore detachment and placed in a cell. The next morning, the man was again taken to the hospital and treated for another drug overdose.

Based on the SIU’s preliminary investigations, SIU Director Joseph Martino concluded that the man was not seriously injured, meaning that the SIU has no jurisdiction to investigate.

“His overdoses were quickly recognized by officers, who took immediate steps to obtain medical attention and were successfully treated at the hospital,” Martino wrote.

The Special Investigations Unit is an independent civilian-based government agency charged with examining incidents involving police officers in which there has been death, serious injury, an accusation of sexual assault or use of firearms against a person.
